Due to the bedrock in the area, the quakes at New Madrid are worse than CA.

A comparison of the isoseismals from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 1811-1812 New Madrid quakes.
There is a lot less intensity data for the New Madrid events so local details are missing. Intensity estimates are based on reports from places shown as blue dots.

Here is another comparison

I don't think it was the first one.  It was the third or fourth earthquake that formed Reelfoot lake.

That bottom map is a little off, because we know how to build buildings and ignore anything below a 6.0.  So while we might have felt it, it wasn't worth reporting.

Few things in the midwest are built to tolerate seismic activity.  That, in additon to the different bedrock mentioned, is bad news.

Speaking for MO, there is a reason why the state has fought so hard to maintain control of aviation, engineer, and MP National Guard units throughout all the years of force restructuring.  Anything over 6.5 has the potential to leave tens of thousands of people cut off from support.  Nearly every road in that area features bridge after bridge - none built to handle a quake.

Don't even get me started about the buildings.  There is no good reason why St. Louis shouldn't have the same earthquake codes as San Francisco or LA.  It doesn't.

I'm not one of the people who wishes that, but I think your logic is a little off.  The whole point of hoping that Cali falls into the ocean, is that there won't be any Liberals left to displace.  They will be...In the Ocean. Under water.

not to downplay the event but there are 10's of thousands of quakes in the u.s. every year. hope you all are well and with little damage. be prepared and trained to deal with them is all, its amazing how many folks dont know earthquakes are a possibility in their ao

This is all in the realm of fantasy, but many Arfcommers expect coastal California to be completely inundated by the Ocean, whereas Chicago, and East St. Louis would still remain high and dry even in the most cataclysmic event.   95% loss of Left Coast Liberals, vs. maybe 30% casualties in the heartland, with the remaining 70% collecting fat FEMA checks and gift cards.

It's not a geologically realistic wish, and I do not hope for it.  (at least not until I get back later this week, anyway)

i know.. im just messing around.  the sad fact is that LA is moving towards San Fran, so in a few millenia we will have one big superlibpower on the west coast.
