I wonder what kind of dog it really was. Boy, 5, killed in S. Texas pit bull attack Witness: Dog locked its jaws around boy's neck Associated Press Originally published 10:06 a.m., June 19, 2008 Updated 10:06 a.m., June 19, 2008 WESLACO — A 5-year-old boy has been mauled to death by a pit bull at the home where he was staying with relatives, said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Rosa Trevino told The Monitor in McAllen for its Thursday editions that the condition of the child's body suggested there was no way emergency responders could have saved his life. Sheriff's deputies were investigating at the home north of Weslaco late into the night on Wednesday. The sheriff said deputies must determine whether the dog had been confined and how the boy came into contact with the animal. Sheriff Trevino declined to identify the boy pending notification of his mother, who lives and works in Washington state. The boy's father lives in Mexico. The sheriff said the boy had been living with his aunt and uncle after Child Protective Services placed him with them. The circumstances of that placement were not immediately known. Luis Palomo, 20, said he was down the street playing football with friends when the trouble began. He said the victim was at home with a baby sitter when one of two pit bulls at the house began running around the front yard, getting a second pit bull inside the home riled up. He said that the baby sitter and boy were inside the house with the second dog and were scared, so he tried to intervene. While he managed to distract the dogs temporarily, the boy wandered out the back door and one of the dogs grabbed him by the torso and dragged him. Palomo said that the dog locked its jaws around the boy's neck. www.caller.com/news/2008/jun/19/boy-5-killed-s-texas-pit-bull-attack/ |

One thing I noticed is. Most pit bull problem owners are the last people who should own a large powerful breed. Most seem to have a pit bull because of its tough image. Not all are lie that but I would say most of the ones with problems. I have one years ago and if was a fine and mild tempered dog. ETA the mom lives in WA and the dad in Mexico? |

Just to keep it fair and balanced. www.caller.com/news/2008/jun/19/infant-hospitalized-after-dog-mauling/ |
I used to own a pit bull and I will own one again anyone who doesn't like that fact can fuck off. It is my right to own them if I want, yes I know that there is a POTENTAL for it to be violent. You know what the last one was kept inside shown attention, was took out on a leash for excersise everyday, and was raised with 4 other dogs of mixed breeds. Not ONCE did that dog act aggrssivey with me or the wife, if it did I would've delt with it right then and there. Again YES i know there is a POTENTAL for aggression with this dog. But some of you act like whiney school-girl liberals over this issue. |
Please, cool it or stay out of the discussion |
it is your right to own one, just like I believe it's your right to own a gun. If you are negligent in the way you keep either that causes someone harm, then you should lose your right. Too many people that are stupid own both, and they give people who own either a bad name. |

Here's the thing, all dogs are dangerous even the little ones can still hurt a person. Pits/bully breeds are just so much more disaterous when they do attack because of the potential they have. I've been around lots of different dogs (my wife has worked for vets and i've volunteered at shelter and boarding facilities). In my experience the dog I've had the most issues with as far as agression have been labradors. now this could be just because of sheer numbers, but I've been around tons of pits and staffies and while I've been around some agressive ones, I'd say that the percentage of aggresive labs I've been around is much higher. Pit's are a very energenic, and loyal breed that need lots of training. It seems that the owners are a good deal more to blame than the dogs. I think that probably 90% or more of the pit attacks are because of poor training or an abusive home. I think the sad news is that a child was killed. Doesn't matter what breed of dog did it. |
Very TRUE! |
Very true. I have owned several dogs of many breeds. And I have 1 or 2 got aggressive, they were delt with appropriately. I had a St. Bernard and loved the thing, and so did the neighborhood kids. But when it got to the point where it could yank me around and i had zero control over it (breaking down the bedroom door was the last straw), I had to find someone who could control it and I got rid of it. If I find myself unabe to control a dog I will find someone who can, or I will dispose of the dog. |
have you even read the thread, the only one to say anything ad about them is ChinoUSMC... maybe read the thread before posting instead of just reading the title |

I love pits, met another just recently and removed a bee stinger from his snout. A complete stranger restraining a pitbull in order to remove a stinger, and the dog really did nothing. The owner has a 2yr old, and the dog loves to play with her. One of the very best breeds in my experiences. |
Fixed it. |
No fixing it would mean... Bad parents wouldn't have kids... And bad dog owners wouldn't have dogs. You fix those two issues and we'd have no problems like this |
There is a Constitutional right to own Pit Bull just like a gun… where is this right located “the puppy amendment”. Dog not intimate object, gun is imamate object. There is NO Constitutional right to own a dog. There is a Constitutional right bear arms. |
I dont knwo where the stat is, but again there are 14 recognized breeds that are NOT pitbulls that are always mistaken and accused of being a pitbull. The stat though I remember was a Lab that did the most damage and death. FWIW YMMV |

Pit Bulls aren't mean, Chows are mean. Every chow i've every been around (3) have tried at some point to bite me. I mean from going to friendly one minute to backing me up behind something or taking a hoe/stick/chair in my hand to get away. I had a pit bull and he was the most nonconfrontation male dog i've ever owned. He was extremely docile until my 90 lb. Yellow Cur attacked him, then he fought like a lion, although no match-he was only 45 lbs. I got tired of the blood on my carport and front porch, so I had to get rid of him after neutering my cur didn't work. My cur is my favorite and my wife will go before he does. |

Pit bulls, and pit bull breeds have almost two times the amount of recorded attacks according to the CDC. CDC Report How do the Pitt Bull apologists refute that data? |
Check out my link. You're wrong. |
do you know how many dog breeds could constitute "pit bull type"? |
Look at the "pure breed" column. More than 50% increase in attacks over the next breed, a Rottweiler. |
you are something else, so what you are trying to say is that only what is covered in the constitution we have a right to have? is there anything that says we have a right to own clothes, own a car, own a motorcycle, have birth day parties. so if its not in the constitution we should have it taken away? you sir are a communist obama lover. |
says nothing about American Pit Bull Terrier. this website is not accurate, and pit bull type is not a breed. until you get real proof you sir are wrong. there is no breed in the world by the name pit bull type pure breed or not. you obviously do not understand the difference between American Pit Bull Terrier and pit bull type. |
American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are all considered "Pit bull types", besides man can you think if any other breed of dog that is more abused, and or trained to hate strangers by ghetto owners? pit bulls are the only breed im aware of that were originaly bred to be non human agressive. |
Okay. Let us know when you come out from underneath your rock.

The difference between a dog and a gun is that the gun doesn't have a will of its own, whereas a dog can and will act on its own accord. You can't compare the two, it is apples and oranges. With that said, I don't think that there should be a ban on any breed in place. I would favor a mandatory civil penalty of a minimum of $1,000,000 to be paid out of the owner's pocket to any victim of a mauling which causes permanent, severe injury or death. This would be in addition to whatever is paid by homeowner's insurance. If the person is worth more than that, then the victim can recover whatever a jury awards them. The standard for the mandatory award should simply be that the dog attacked the victim and the dog was owned by X person, therefore X person owes a minimum of $1,000,000 in personal assets to the victim. If they have to work the rest of their lives to pay for it, then so be it....I hope that they think it was worth it to be irresponsible. Owning a dog which is capable of harming a human child is a responsibility GREATER than owning a gun because, as I said before, you have to control the will of the animal through training and discipline. If you choose to take on that responsibility, then so be it. ETA: Notice that this would apply to any dog that causes permanent and severe injury or death. I'd bet pit-bull owners would be paying out the vast majority of the money, though. I can't remember the last time that a Golden Retriever killed a baby. |

Don’t hold your breath. |
I'm no apologist, but isn't that like saying "military style weapons" are responsible for more deaths than "fill in the blank?" "Apples & Oranges" and "over simplification." There were many factors in that childs tragic death. If pit bulls were banned some people would still have them. It's tragic, but accidents happen. FWIW I have a "crazy cousin" who has a pit. He loves it to death. It killed his brothers pit that was on a chain. It's was taken from him by Animal Control but somehow he got it back. I told him that I would put it down if I saw it running loose and acting aggressive towards anybody or animal. I won't like it but I'll do it in a heartbeat. So far he has been very responsible in keeping it under control. Hessian-1

you are the rock, who does not understand the difference between American Pit Bull Terrier and pit bull type. I'm out, i dont argue. |
dude, carefull or your gonna get the ban hammer |
| This is a topic that usually gets my blood boiling. For credibility sake: I have worked as a professional Animal Control Officer and currently work as a LE K-9 Handler. It has already been mentioned that the problem is the owners, not the dogs. Most of the attacks attributed to pits, and to a smaller degree, rotts usually arise out of the bario/ghetto. Bunch of thug gangsta pieces of shit get a pit cause all the rappers have them. Put a spiked collar around their neck and use a piece of log chain as a leash to look tough. Large breed dogs all have the potential for aggression. This means that they all need to be trained properly. As for the question of which dog breed bites most, don't trust the CDC as they report the bites that end up in ER's. The number one biter is the Cocker Spaniel. The problem is Cocker Spaniels rarely rip someones throat out. As with firearms, there are any number of items/situations that cause more deaths annually, but guns just get all the headlines. |

not my words "Traditionally of indomitable courage and tenacity. Highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children". Both AKC and FCI standards have similar phrasing. Our breed was the first, and until recently the only one whose standard specifically mentions its goodness towards children. This alone should give an idea of how strong is the tie between STBs and kids. In 1997, the Southampton University made a serious analysis about the temperament of all KC breeds. Based on this, the Pet Dogs magazine asked Dr. John Bradshaw, Antrozoology Director in that U, and Sarah Whitehead, expert in canine etiology, to pick the top 10 breeds for children, in no particular order. Of course, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier made that list, and the authors went on to say that they were so extremely patient with children, that the kids should be trained so they didn't harm the dogs! |
Watch the personal attacks yo. Instead of name calling... why don't you explain the difference or direct him to a site that does the work for you. |
Pay no attention to that clearly biased report! Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! Pit bulls are gentle dogs! Its the bad owner's who are the real killers! Besides...the children ought not to be annoying the dog! Poor little kid... |
No Military style weapons = inanimate object/tool must have a human operator. Dog = living animal that acts on its own. Now only in the mind of the Brady Bunch where guns jump up kill people all by themselves are the two equal. |
You sir are a communist obama lover. |

This has never happened before.
