That time of year again.  Was getting ready to service some equipment and saw a yellow jacket nest opening right where I need to work.  And, yes, it is quite active.

I do not have enough Sevin dust to treat it after dark, and it is right next to the outter wall of a wooden building, so gasoline is out.  I would really like to do something now so I can finish my work.

I have carb cleaner and spray brake cleaner, but little confidence in a quick resolution with either.

Beer run, er....sevin run and wait till dark?

you don't have to light the gas on fire....

Use a shop-vac with the hose taped to a piece of thin wall conduit or such.
Place hose at entrance and enjoy the sight of them being sucked in.
When done, leave vac running, spray a bit of bee killer in, place a rag in hose, then shut it off.
Works well, and it's fun!

Wait until dark.  Then exterminate them.

Watch for the entrance guards.  They are watching for you.

Go Yellow Jackets!

Oh, wait... those yellow jackets.

Never mind.

A glass full of hot soapy water will do the trick. Just splash the whole glass full on the little bastards. Your welcome.

ETA: only use the soapy water trick if you don't have access to wasp spray (pictured in the next post)

It works. I use it at least once a year.

Weak sauce. Use Ortho Spectracide. Much more powerful and keeps killing for a week or more. Costs a bit more, but it's worth it.

Also, waiting until dark is for pansies.  I don't have time to wait for dark. I've probably killed 30-40 nests this summer. Only stung once this year, but it wasn't while spraying nests.

OP, use both then

It sounds stupid but place a glass bowl over the opening. They don't think they are trapped so they will not dig another tunnel.  It takes a few days. But you can get on with your work. Also it is cool to watch them freak out and die.

soak a rag in diesel fuel, flop it over the hole, pour in a quart of diesel (through the cloth) enjoy dead yellow jackets.

Yeah, but then the shop vac basically becomes unexploded ordnance.

That damn thing would sit there for hours in my back yard as I stared at it...I don't know when I'd have the balls to open it up.

You are well-armed, sir
B12 Chemtool will knock a yellowjacket right out of the air, and right ricky-tick, at that.

I used a shop vac with a funnel taped to the end of the hose.  I also put about 2 inches of water in the bottom of the shop vac.  That took care of the little stingers.

Was going through the munitions bunker and found 2 bug bombs from sefveral years ago when I had a similar located problem.

Battle plan is to tape one bomb to a piece of conduit , pull the pin, and jam it in the hole.

Will update with pics later, but will have to wait till nightfall.

Thats why you give it a shot of bee killer at the end of the day, before shutting it off and plugging the hose.
Always works well.

I believe I scored a victory.

Only one sentry, and I waited till he ducked down the hole.  I locked the button in the firing position and crammed the can in the hole. The 10 ft pole was overkill, could have placed the bomb by hand.

I forgot how long those fogger bombs spray, should be a done deal.  Will do a BDA at first light to confirm total destruction.

Best method is mix malathion in an empty gallon jug according to directions.  Wait till dark and pour down hole leaving jug upside down over the hole.  No yellow jackets anymore.

Yellow Jackets often have a secondary escape hole located somewhere a foot or two away from the primary one.  Forget that and you'll get stung sooner or later.

Every time I spray something into a vac the thing catches on fire
fumes get around the sparking motor brushes
I would be careful there.
