I got off of KSP for a while, decided to re-download and there's a Mun!

I'm still using the freebie demo, but haven't successfully crashed into the Mun yet. How are we doing so far, guys?

Last thread got Archived, I know it's a pseudo-dupe.

So far I've managed to master getting into orbit and back, and I've tried the EVA thing.   I've come close to Mun but I always slingshot into solar orbit.

Tag for later...

I just bought the game a week ago, I had a giant rocket made, but now that I have added a ton is struts it randomly blows up, or blows up when I put the throttle above 80%.   FYI its not my first time playing I was addicted months ago, but I finally bought the full version.

Edit..it also randomly destabilizes when I get into space.

Anyone know what the difference between SAS and RCS is?

This. I miss it by a RCH, then start my trek about the sun.

SAS is stability.

RCS is exo-atmospheric control thrusters.

Get into the CFG files on Notepad in the Parts folder.

I made an engine weigh nothing and output enough thrust to fire it into exoatmosphere in about 3.5 seconds

The full version is worth the $18 (or whatever), but only a couple of the engines have an obvious fuel consumption setting in the cfg. Lowering weight of the tank and the fuel capacity works, tho.

Purchased version has 4 planets (plus Kerbal) and a bunch of moons. Landing on a moon around the Jupiter position planet without cheating a little bit is beyond me at this point.

So I just made a rocket that chokes my computer. Goes to 6fps on liftoff  For some reason it barely uses my GPU (10%) and its only using 30% of my CPU. Its obviously not a final build but they need to make it use the GPU.

Only uses  ~670 parts.

Holy shit 670 parts!

When I was working for my dad up in MI we built a computer that would get a smooth 42fps with a rocket that had ~100 solid boosters going at once.

My computer is nothing special but its pretty powerful. Its kind of annoying that Kerbal isn't using it to its full potential. I've got a video of it processing and uploading but its going to take awhile.

Press the M key to open the orbital map.

When you start getting speed and start getting close to exoatmospheric travel you need to drop the nose to 45 degrees from the horizon.

You need to get your Apoapsis and Periapsis to about the same. There are tutorials on Youtube.

I much prefer to make multistage ballistic missiles

Hmmmm. I was getting up to altitude, then bending that bitch over to the horizon. Not an elliptical orbit, but periapsis would be really close to Kearth, apoapsis really far away... That is, if I didn't shoot off into the great beyond.

You just described an elliptical orbit

What you're wanting is a near-circular orbit, where Apo and Peri are within a couple hundred or so of each other. What you need to do is push to where it gets you that high elliptical, then nose 180 so the thrust nozzles are facing forward, do a retrograde burn, then try to expand your orbit by doing some controlled burns here and there. Takes practice.

But the orbit is circular, Kearth just isn't centered. Maybe? I dunno, I've had beers.

Do you have some kind of a mod on that, my explosions dont look nearly as good.

FYI Guys this is well worth $18. Yes its glitchy, but its not like some huge company is making this. Its still in test phase. But $18 gives you access to the newest builds and guarantees you the final version as you have already paid for it! This isn't much money for a very cool game. I'm glad to support someone making a decent came as compared to the retarded shit coming out like the COD series.

Grim:

You didn't do the Mun right

You needed to raise your periapsis to a safe level, spin the rocket around with some RCS, lock it into a 180 from direction of travel (use the yellow marker with the X through it), then do a retrograde burn once you are RIGHT AT periapsis, and watch on the orbital map as your orbital path closed around the Mun.

I played with this a while back but got bored. I understand there are people making mod packs with new rocket parts and even space planes and what not.

Anyone running any good mods?

I wish the embed player showed the description. It was late last night and I had class at 9am so I played it nice and dangerous and basically crashed on purpose.

The current version seems very different from the early version I played when it.first came out. Lots of new parts. I don't like playing with the kids because it.becomes.alot less challenging. But I want to download the space shuttle.mod.

I was playing on a faster computer we have at my house, using only the demo parts with no modifications to parts, and managed to make a rocker that has 6 tricouplers hanging off it with one metric shitton of fuel and 36 LVT-30s pushing it; I achieved an orbit with a periapsis of ~250km, and an apoapsis of ~340km, and had enough fuel to do a good enough retroburn to achieve reentry.

We've made it to Duna!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did it with the help of the Protractor mod which tells you the optimal planetary alignment and when to start burn, which isn't 100% fool proof still requires course adjustments it just gets you in the neighborhood apparently.
THANK GOD for the quick save and quickload feature. It took 4 landing attempts before I did it successfully. The altimeter isn't above ground level, but I have a good feel for it now.

The landing zone.

The initial ship I used to get there. Why yes it has 20 solid rocket boosters in addition to the large liquid boosters attached to it, why?

Get into a stable 70-100km easterly orbit or so
Go around Kerbin until the Mun pops on the horizon
As soon as the Mun appears, burn prograde (in the direction of your ship) at 90° on the horizon of the navball
Keep burning until your apoapsis (I think that's the one ) encounters the Mun. It'll say Mun encounter and show an entrance and exit into its sphere of influence. If you burn too far you will need to burn retrograde and slow down.
If you did it right you'll be on course for a Mun encounter. Time warp until you encounter the Mun and are in its sphere of influence.
Once you are in the Mun's sphere of influence, wait until you're at the periapsis and burn retrograde to slow down and setup an orbit around the Mun.

Hopefully you can take it from there. You'll need to setup an orbit and deorbit and retroburn down to the surface. i like to set the periapsis about 5-10km above the surface and right as I'm about to get there, I retroburn and start my decent. You'll want to hit the surface under 10 meters per second or you'll break your landing legs. You need to kill your horizontal velocity so to do that burn while the navball is over the green circle with the X in it (retrograde burn) until it is centered in the blue area. That will mean you'll be falling straight down. Once you are relatively centered you can retroburn down to the surface and set her down easy.

There are lots of how to videos that explain it all that may be more helpful.
