It's main purpose is for video editing.  For years I've gotten away with just using my laptop, until I got my GoPro HD Hero and now I'm having major problem.  May also do some gaming, but I don't give a shit about fps on high in some game, low res is just fine with me.  I use Sony Vegas for editing if that makes any difference.

So anyway, I'd rather go the AMD route for due to cost, quad core etc.  SATA drives, and will probably run 4gb or more memory.  So really I just need help picking the motherboard, processor, and video card.  I know some of you guys do some awesome video production so I'm hoping y'all can point me in the right direction.  It's been 6-7 years since I've built my own machine so I'm out of the loop as far as what's good, and what's a good value etc.

Many thanks!

CES 2011 starts on January 6th.

More information will be available on Intel Sandy Bridge and AMD Bulldozer processors along with new motherboards.

You will get better answers in about 5 or 6 days.

Ok, so with that event over and done with, and after reading the amd vs intel thread I may be willing to go the intel route if the price is right.

So I need help picking the MB, CPU, Vid Card, and Power Supply.  Main goal is video editing.  Any ideas?

Video editing ?

And you want to save money by using AMD ?

Please tell me you are joking

start here

While I don't know what NLE you'll want to run - I've not found a single one, not to mention render engine that runs worth a damn on anything AMD makes

there is a reason Intel costs more, yeah it really is THAT much better

Edit again - Vegas - played with it and yup ran like a dog on my AMD rig

We edit tons of video at my office...and I heartily concur with this statement.

Not to mention

HD editing ????

Shit man - Aftereffects ran for over 3 DAYS on a SIMPLY transform on a 17 Minute SD clip I ran - on a 4 Core AMD

Same clip on a OLD 3.2 P4 was 4 Hours

DAYS vs Hours

going up to HD - I'd be looking at Dual Xeons and more Ram than if sanely reasonable

and it still won't be enough

Considering Intel's big boo boo on the P67 series boards, I would wait or go AMD right now

Intel MOBO Bug

Intel MOBO Bug - Technical details

For those who don't want to read or are not computer savvy...the board comes with 6 hard drive connections.  2 are the top speed - SATA3, 4 are SATA2 or middle speed.  The 4 SATA2 ones have some serious issues with data degradation and outright failure of the port.

So, if you plan on using more than 2 drives, skip the P67 for now unless you are using an RAID or SATA PCI-E card.

I was hoping to use to SATA drives.

He's planning on doing HD video

he better plan to use the 2 SATA3 ports with SSDs

and then a SATA3 Raid card for SATA3 Spindles (and a LOT of them)

Really? I don't do serious stuff in Vegas 8, but my AMD 9950BE seems to run it nicely. Not the fastest CPU, but rendering the video doesn't use much resources.

I highly doubt I'll be rendering much HD stuff.  But I can't even toy with vids from the GoPro Hero without converting it first, which takes forever on the laptop.

Now I'm all confused, half saying AMD, the other half Intel.  I don't mind intel, just as long as it won't cost too much money.  Ideally I'd like to spend less than $600 on the build, and most of the parts will cost %25 more down here.

Well you ain't gonna be able to do much, and at any speed, in HD with $600 to play with

Sorry that's just the truth

Could be that I'm not getting your goals and such

But the simple fact of the matter is that especially in video editing (and that's a broad range of activities, let's just say transposing from one format to another) AMD has a MAJOR disadvantage to Intel

Sure it CAN be done on AMD

and it prolly won't be slower than on the laptop (could be debatable as you can get real close to real time HD with a Laptop now assuming it's the right one)

But it won't be anywhere close to as fast as on Intel

For the record my NLE box - I think the Case cost less than $600

Other than that - well the PSU and BluRay drive were less - well the major components yeah they blow your budget by a bit

Hmm, well I really don't want another laptop.  Mine now is a Intel Dual core @ 1.46 GHz.  I imagine a quad core would be a serious improvement over the performance of what I have now.  Also can't game on this.

Ok, so say $800 and below.  An affordable Intel, Motherboard, and a Vid Card what should I look at, I don't want to get a cpu that doesn't work with a shit on the mb, and like I said I know fuck all about vid cards these days.  I'm going to get the cheapest case I can cause I don't care about looks, and I imagine a 650w power supply would be ok?  I mentioned gaming, but I could give a shit about Crysis on the best settings.

not quite, the associated chipsets are what the recall is about, not the processors themselves.

For one I don't want to pick a wrong MB/CPU combo.
And I know fuck all about video cards.  I guess I can sort out the MB/CPU on my end.  But still need help on a decent vid card.
