Sorry if this has been beaten to death here, but from what I have noticed these products change from year to year. In the past, I have used McAfee, Symantec, AVG, and CA. AVG was my favorite, but their most recent review on pcmag.com had them rated lower than some other products. Perhaps pcmag is biased.

Thinking about putting MSE on the gf's laptop along with Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes. Anyone have any clashes between MSE and Spybot/Malwarebytes or vice versa??? You don't need anything but MSE if you teach her good internet hygiene. If you can convince her to use firefox, then one of two addons are all you need in combination with MSE to keep you safe from pretty much anything (except yourself). Personally I like noscript, it blocks pretty much everything including flash which is the biggest offender in web security threats these days, but it's annoying to use until you get your common 'trusted' list of sites built up and you have to resist the urge to simply do "allow all on this page" even at sites you frequently visit. If that's too much work, flashblock just handles flash, and leaves javascript alone. it's much easier to deal with for a beginner. From there all you have to do is be careful what you download/run. If it ends in any executable extension (exe, com, bat, cmd, etc.) just don't do it. Enabling the built in firewall (if it's disabled) will help, not so much for protecting you against incoming threats, but to let you know if the machine has been compromised and turned into a zombie bot or something. I haven't run anything but MSE in years and I haven't had a problem. Not using IE and not blindly allowing flash will protect you against just about every browser based flaw these days. |
