I have a Marlin 30-30 with a scout scope set up and really like it.

Savage, Ruger, Mossberg, Steyer, etc. What do you own and how much do like it? What are your opinions of shooting it?

I wear glasses for distance, so I like the scout scope set up for hunting.

What is the best buy of the lot?

Naw, this discussion, this particular one, won't degenerate into a whole cesspool like the last however many on a related note over the past couple of weeks or so...

I have faith.

You get double the scouting done that way.

I own a Marlin .30-30 with peep sights; it fills the general-purpose rifle role for me.

I do not and will not own bolt guns due to being left-handed. They're inferior to leverguns anyways, at least for my purposes.

Sort of.

A real long time ago, I made a mount for a bushnell phantom for a .308 k98.  I still have it in a drawer somewhere.

Practically, it was good for practicing milling as a 12 year old.  Otherwise, pretty useless in OH.

I'm pretty sure Col Copper is looking down on this and laughing his butt off at the amount of butthurt he has caused.

I have the GSR and really like the gun for what it is and find it to be effective.

I have the Ruger with the Leupold Scout scope. I think it is a fun rifle, while it leaves something to be desired for the purists it is close enough for me.

I have a 1916 Spanish Mauser (93) that was converted to 7.62x51. It's a safe queen while I procrastinate on the project I have in mind for it: drifting out the rear sight and pinning a scout mount to it, then mounting some sort of forward optic.

It might be an awesome shooter, or it might be an even bigger pile of shit than it already is. It might also blow up if I put a hot enough .308 in it.

I'm not in a hurry on this project.

A Marlin 30-30 with a forward mounted RDS would be cool, otherwise it's a kinda useless concept.

Especially in a ban State.

This poor horse has been beaten so severely that PETA is starting to create dummy accounts to track the abuse and report us for animal cruelty.

Lets send it to the glue factory once and for all.

edited to add: I cant think of a better use for post 556 than to post the modern, high speed, low drag, tier 1 operator scout.

I have a GSR with an IER Weaver Super Slam 1-5x in an ADM SW mount.

It pisses off everybody, the Scout purists, the #Antiscou, and the ADM hate mongers.

I love it.

This.  Love my GSR; it's my main hunting rifle for most medium to large game.  No point to a semi in an area you won't get a second shot, and the bolt lock safety is awesome when clambering through brush.

Older picture (not going to use that long mag at that spot in the future).

There's articles detailing HP White laboratories testing those to huge proof load levels with no issues.

I have one and am toying with a similar scout project for it, but I might buy another to do the same thing.

Yeah, I remember reading that article.

I'm not worried about the relatively low-pressure milsurp 7.62 I've fed it, but I have no idea what stresses the receiver has experienced in its 9 decades of service.

As you probably know, the 98 model has a blowout hole at the bottom of the receiver that sends the gases and fragments of a catastrophic failure downwards as it blows out the magazine well.

The 93 (i.e., Spanish Mauser) has no such hole. The 93 sends gases and fragments back into your face if the action fails. That blowout hole in the 98 was one of the major evolutions in Mausers.

The main reason I don't take this rifle very seriously is that it feeds like shit. The original 7mm Mauser it was chambered for is a considerably longer cartridge in OAL than the 7.62 NATO. The 7.62 NATO sits way back in the magazine and tends to nose-dive during feeding unless you move the bolt just right.

Can't help it, though, I still like this rifle. Short, light, fast-handling, cool history... I want to get it set up and running 100% and kill some pigs with it.

Ruger scout in 308.
Awesome for subsonic 308s with a can. Quiet as a mouse and fun as hell to teach kids and women with.
They feel like they are shooting a big cartridge without the bang and kick.

I have a Steyr Scout in 223. It is my favorite rifle. I have a Leupold 2.5 Scout scope for it and a Primary Arms RDS as well.

I can shoot this rifle all day long, it's so fun to shoot, and damn accurate.

Scout rifles are unpopular here but that's not how I decide what guns to buy. I love it. I'm going to get one in 308 next.

I bought a scouterized Mauser in 6.5 swede bedded in a synthetic stock with a Burris Scope it was very heavy,
totally defeating the purpose, took me a year to sell it.
I found a scouterized Rem. Md7 in 308 for a great price, stripped off the silliness and still have the rifle with a 1-4 Leupold.

I have the Ruger Gunsite Scout 308 with laminate stock and 16.1 in. barrel. I am quite pleased with the rifle.
I've put 1000 rounds through it with few issues. A Burris scout scope is occasionally mounted in the forward
position using Leupold QRW low rings. I mainly use the factory open sights at the range and while carrying in
the bush. The supplied metal magazines are excellent as are the Ruger polymer magazines. Magpul's 7.62 AC
AICS short action magazines work flawlessly too.

Barnes 168g TTSX factory load chronographs 2558 fps / 13 fps SD from the short barrel.
Federal 165g Fusion 2497 fps / 22 fps SD.
Federal 180g Fusion 2462 fps / 15 fps SD.

YMMV.

I have Scout type rifles:
A Rem 600 in 308
A Rem 700 in 350 Rem mag
A Marlin 1895 in 45-70
Those who don't like the Scout concept should probably stick to conventionally scoped rifles, whether bolt action, lever, or semiauto, such as the AR15 poodle shooter.
I'm happy with my rifles and couldn't possibly care less about your opinion.

My AR15s have never shot a poodle. What they can do is shoot 30 rounds into a 50 gallon barrel in under 5 seconds. Can your scout rifle do that?
