I don’t believe in ghosts and don’t have any stories first hand, but I enjoy them. Anyone have any to tell?

Been listening to old Victorian ghost stories lately while on the road.

My dad believed in ghosts and had some stories.

Once in an old mining cabin where he encountered a fast flying entity that flew past his head.

In our old house as a kid there would be knocking on one window of the bedroom one night, next night the knocking would be on the other window.

More recently  there were instances of unexplained knocking on the door. Light knocking and repetitive, and no one there when you opened it.

Once, my dad was camping alone in Baja, in what I believe was an old gas station. He said the spooks were making noise, slamming doors, etc all night. Even lifted him in his sleeping blanket. He was tired and decided to ignore it and go to sleep. Maybe he had a ministroke?

He had a close friend, who didn't believe in ghosts. One night camping in Baja they both heard the sounds of people talking in a high pitched very fast voice, in a language they didn't recognize (it wasn't Spanish). This convinced my dad's friend.

My dad didn't make things up and in general was outstanding when it came to remembering things. However, he was predisposed to assume things were due to ghosts, you could say he was a biased observer.

My grandfather was hardened WWII vet one night I heard him screaming at the top of his lungs ran downstairs where he was sleeping while visiting and he stated the former dead owner of the house was stsnding at the foot of his bed looking at him. Never believed in ghosts before that.

My grandfather committed suicide. It's possible he haunted my grandmother at her previous house. She said she woke up in the middle of the night a few times with the TV and radio going full blast. I don't think that was the house he killed himself in and AFAIK she's never had any issues after moving to another house.

My grandpa said that when he was a kid he worked on a farm. Two younger guys he worked with died in a grain bin collapse.

He said a week or so later when he was working, the two guys were sitting in their break area. He said they didn’t say anything, he didn’t try talk to them. He said it was he wasn’t scared and never saw them again.

The mind is a hell of a thing too, especially when coping with a type of trauma.

When I lost my first dog I was a wreck, like an absolute mess. We had him before we had kids, when I wasn't working we were hunting or playing, and I had never really lost anything that close to me before.

I was looking out the kitchen window a few days after it happened and it was like a waking dream. I saw him just trotting through the yard like I did every single day prior to losing him. I knew it was just my imagination messing with me, but it was vivid. I dreamed about him a lot that first month too.

Some people would call it seeing a ghost or something, but I'm pretty sure it was just my brain doing the best it could to process it all.

A study found that losing a good dog can be just as psychologically stressful as losing a spouse or a kid, and boy it felt that way with that one, I was in bad shape for several weeks.

The house I grew up in. Nothing crazy, but my stereo would turn on with the volume on high in the middle of the night, and a phone would be off the hook when I picked another phone up. My stereo was never turned up that high, and the phone would hang up on its own.

There were other random stories that convinced me something wasn’t right, but we never saw anything.

The house I grew up in was built and lived in by a lumber baron in the 1800's. It was on 240 acres of land at the time. He was well known in the community as being very generous and kind. He would help kids out in various ways all over area.

His wife and kids all died, not at the same time. But he was the last one living in that large house.

After awhile he became a recluse. And eventually suicide.

In the 1950's, the land was all divided up and later mostly became a large suburb in the area.

My family moved in, in 1984 and I was 4 y/o. Shortly after the former owners made contact with my parents and filled them in about the history.

After a few years we would hear violin music playing from upstairs. Lights would be turned off in rooms nobody was in. The stove would turn on at lunchtime frequently.

Then in the early 90's a pipe burst when we were all away, but somehow a 911 hangup call was made from the house and when the police arrived and walked around the house, they noticed the water pouring out the backdoor, they went in turned the water off. Saving thousands of dollars in damage.

His name was Lorenzo ReNee'.

My dad still lives there, he is in his 70's.

Lorenzo was an angel to us. Not a demon.

Yes, a ghost from the Civil War used to take grand pap's Model A for joy rides. Annoyed the old guy greatly.

I don't really blame the ghost; if I had only ridden horses and trains during life, I'd want to tool around the block a couple of times in a jalopy too.

A few days after my grandads funeral (I was 10) I saw him sitting at the foot of my bed.

A few years before that, I woke up and saw a woman standing over me. When I was 16 I told the first person, my grandma, about it. When I described the woman to her, she told me it was her mother.

We lived in a house my parents rented when my house burned. I was in the 5th grade and the house belonged to a lady my mother knew. It was an old school house that had 9 rooms on the bottom and two school rooms on top. the lady who owned the house's father served in WWI and died in the house..........we explored that house all over and the middle bedroom had stairs that went up to the school rooms up top. Many times we heard footsteps upstairs and once in the early fall after hearing alot of noise all over the house, we saw what looked like fog rolling down the stairs and the sensation of people walking past you

Multiple stories in my family.

As a kid they fascinated me and scared the shit out of me.

As an adult who has experienced all sorts of versions of weird ass dreams (used to see hat-man every night in college) and sleep paralysis, I'm guessing most of the family stories are just that being misinterpreted as ghosts.

ETA::I can tell you sleep paralysis is a very weird thing. Most of the time I can tell it is happening, that its not real, and its no big deal. Then every once in awhile it still is scary. Often you sense a presence in the room. "Seeing" aliens, people, etc. Often feeling pressure on your chest or like someone is holding you down. Auditory hallucinations. Feeling that you are going to die. Trying to move or call for help, but can't. Etc. Most vivid I can remember from recent memory was a small shadow child (semi-transparent childlike figure) "sitting" my chest angrily choking me. All this stuff has happened enough that I am starting to think that some of the time, maybe even most of the time, my eyes aren't even really open when these episodes are occurring. They say most people experience this type of thing once or so in their lives, and I would immediately forgive anyone who took it to be related to ghosts, because it all feels very real. The first time it happened to me I thought for sure it was supernatural. However, I'm "fortunate" enough to have it happen semi-regularly for the last 22 years or so (didn't start until I was in college), so I've learned a lot about it through personal experience. Because of this, my personal opinion is I think a lot of ghost sightings are related to this type of mental state (at least most of the ones that center around being asleep/in bed during the sighting).

My great great grandpa was riding a horse back from a night of drinking. He saw a figure in a cemetery, holding a lamp, and the figure ran towards him. The figure, by now recognizable as a man, hopped the fence with ease and grabbed the horses bridle.

It was his dead father, great great great grandpa, and he said, "Son. If you ever drink again you'll be with me...burning in hell."

He turned, hopped the fence, and disappeared. The horse nearly died he ran so hard, and GG grandpa gave up drinking that very night.

Neat story

Heard disembodied voices. Basically extremely rapid whispering like somebody cupping their hands around your ear and telling you something really fast in a language I couldn’t understand. Happened at my last house. When I was TDY, my buddy experienced the exact same thing in the same room while housesitting for me. Sent me a “hey fucker, your house is haunted” text message.

Same friend and I both saw an apparition in my current home one day while hanging out watching TV.

Shadow figures, doors opening and closing on their own.

Other stuff as well but I am too tired to type it out.

Some of these stories creep me out.

When I was in jr. high, my family moved to the outskirts of a small town in central TX, on what was left of a former ranch.  The house we moved to was built in the 1870s, and was formerly part of a much larger ranch, but now sat on about 40 acres.  It was a really cool house--it had been added onto but the main part was still intact.  It had the original double fireplace, bench seats, old pulley windows, original door hinges and locks, built in closets, high ceilings in the bedrooms, etc.  I loved the house and the place was perfect for a kid, but there always seemed to be some sort of...presence there that creeped me out.  There were a few times where I woke up in the middle of the night and I swore I 'felt' someone standing over the end of my bed.  I never saw anything, but I definitely felt as though something was there.  The room adjacent to mine was my little brother's room and he could never sleep there.  He was always waking up in the middle of the night scared, etc.  He eventually moved into my bedroom and I moved out to one of the rooms just off the porch that had been added onto the house.  His old bedroom became the "parlor"--just another sitting/living area, and it was always a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house (which could partially be explained by it being on the north side of the house).  But we had several cats as a kid and NONE of them would go in that room.  In fact one of them wandered in that room one day and just freaked the fuck out, meowing, hissing, etc. and ran out.  When my girlfriend (eventual wife) came over to visit when I was home from college, she brought her cat.  She was sleeping in that room and felt something too, and her cat absolutely refused to enter that room.  My wife and her cat were inseperable so it was extremely unusual.

Another time, my cousins, my brother and I were playing "war" outside at night.  I was hiding on the property a little bit away from the house.  As I looked towards the house, I saw a white figure bend down in our garden area next to the house.  I looked away because I thought I heard one of my cousins sneaking up on me, but when I looked back the figure was gone.  It turned out that my brother saw this same figure--none of my cousins saw it.  And he said that when he and his friends went camping on the property, they would occasionally see something that looked very much like it off in the distance beneath a giant pecan tree that sat right in the middle of the property.  We just called it "the white thing".

There were a few other weird things that happened there but it just gives me chills thinking about them so I'll save them for another day.

I'm related to James Ruppert - perpetrator of the Easter Sunday Massacre. He died in 2022, but the house is still famous and is nearby.

Plenty of ghost stories there. I ran into a guy about a 15 years ago who just so happened to be writing a book about haunted places in Ohio. I asked if he had included the Easter Sunday Massacre house on Minor Ave, he freaked out that I had heard about it, let alone knew more than he did.

Yup.

I was a ocean park ranger 30+years ago. When I would close the gates at the beach pavilion at night, It felt like someone was right behind me and the hair would stand up on the back of my neck.  I would put the truck high beams on and turn on both alley lights on the light bar because there was thick brush on either side of the driveway.

The same beach pavilion building would have other weird shit happen at night too.

One night off-season, I was Bsing with the Bay Constables who sometimes closed the gates when we were busy. We're talking guys in their 50's, one of them a retired NYPD guy who definitely did not scare easy.  They both admitted they did the same thing when they were alone and even unsnapped their holsters.

I recently looked up where all the Gilgo Beach serial killer bodies were found. They didn't get specific until after the trial was over.  Sure enough, a couple of bodies were buried about 200 feet away.  Jane doe and the baby.

I've seen some weird shit out there at night. I would not be surprised if there were more bodies out there.

My Grandma (Dad's Mom) casually mentioned feeling the presence of my Grandpa after he passed away. We pretty much chalked that up to grief, lonliness, and early stages of dementia.

I had a really subtle experience at my Uncle's funeral. He was a musician, and I was looking at a picture of him playing the fiddle in his kitchen. I have virtually no musical talent, but I could play Amazing Grace on the harmonica. I had this thought that it would have been nice to have tried to play that song with him. Just as I start to walk away, the quiet music plaing in the background changed to Amazing Grace.

I think that is easily explained away as coincidence. I'd like to think that it was the spirit of my Uncle being comforting in that moment, but it could also be a demonic entity trying to see if I'd take the bait. I'm just going to leave that alone as a nice memory and move on.

I think I told the long version of my haunted house story in "the scary thread". Short version...
rented a small house in Mexico. Things started happening from day 1. At first, it was just loud noises.
Over the coming weeks it became violent. I saw a heavy glass ashtray fly across the room and break against the
wall. We ended up moving out (the next day) after my 4yo daughter was physically attacked. Upon leaving, the landlord
admitted that it was his dead father.

The house didn't have any spooky feel to it, and I was never frightened. If things hadn't escalated we would
have stayed.

I have worked in several prisons with very long histories dating back to the 1800s. Two were mental hospitals prior to being prisons. I have heard and seen things I cannot explain, multiple times. At one I worked at I worked the night shift, during the day your too busy to notice things, but at night when everyone is asleep that's when things happen. I am not the only one to have seen things, any one who worked nights there had seen things too.

Right near the end of my grandfather’s life, he was at home alone with the TV on, asleep.

I walked into the house, and went to the bathroom, and as you pass to the hallway to go to the bathroom, you can see directly into the kitchen.

I saw my grandmother, plain as day, standing at the stove looking out the back window as I glanced into the kitchen walking past; and then did a double take.

My grandmother had been dead for 10 years at that point.

Gone in a flash as soon as I looked again. It’s as if; as soon as my brain got the message “wait that’s not right.”; instantly gone as I looked the second time.

I didn’t believe in ghosts. Period. Thought it was a bunch of bullshit. People looking for attention or in and out of consciousness as they were falling asleep. It was always “at the foot of my bed” - etc.

I do now. This was broad daylight in a well lit kitchen. I didn't believe any of that mumbo jumbo - but I know sure as hell what I saw.

I wonder if she was waiting. The house they lived in was her childhood home.

Years before my grandma passed, our old maid in Hong Kong saw her in the back room at the computer, but knew she was in the bedroom.. she ran to the bedroom crying, thinking my grandma passed,  but she was fine.

After she actually passed, our last maid heard kitchen noises at night when she was alone in the apartment- the maids' quarters were next to the kitchen (old 50s/60s HK apartment).
My grandma would make very specific noises in the kitchen when making a snack, I'd recognize them anywhere.   Our maid heard them, said 'nope,' locked her bedroom door, rolled over and went to bed ??
My grandma raised me, if I heard that I'd go in and look.  I'm disappointed I didn't get the chance to maybe see her again.  We since sold that apartment.   We're still friends with our last maid, but she has a different employer now.

I had an experience as a child, but I'll save that for another day.

Worked at Arrowhead facility near Indian burial ground - the labeler operators used to see a "guy" sitting up on top of the filler house sometimes. That one was interesting because different people on different shifts over 4 years all reacted different. Some FREAKED and management would transfer them somewhere else, they'd heard it all before.

One of my contributions from another thread.

My "10 Years Old and New House" story reminds of some experiences I had going out to a friend's uncles farm house. I don't remember how old the house might have been but it could have been built in the 1930s-1940s, it was very nice Old Farm House, very well kept inside and out.

I first started visiting there when I was 12, my friend's aunt and uncle were extremely nice easy going retired farm people. They very much lived on the main floor. What got me was the 'upstairs', I never saw or heard anything but it made me extremely uncomfortable. It was almost like walking into some type of electric field.

This was about 2 years after my "10 Years Old and New House" experience so I was somewhat sensitive to something there. My friend never felt anything but thought some of the old time pictures watched him. We camped out many times over the years but I never would have stayed the night in that house. My friend did tell me about an aunt with a very strict reputation that had passed away in one of the bedrooms upstairs. It was almost certainly something paranormal but I have no idea what it might have been. I have never, since then, felt anything stronger. After getting the $%^t scared out of me at age 10 or so, I may well have been blocking some of the things I might have otherwise noticed. By the time I was in my 20s, the effects, if they were still there didn't bother me much if at all.

ETA: I actually tested the 'feeling' I got by walking up and down the stairway to the 2nd floor. I could tell when I encountered "it" and when I left the 'area' going back down stairs. Whatever it was it didn't vary any as I walked about the second story. I have read of other sensitives mentioning these types of feelings in actual haunts, eg.   (Sybil Leek working with Hans Holzer on a case in California.)  In my case IDK, it could have been residual.

No. But my grandfather used to tell us grandkids a pretty entertaining story about how he once caught a Leprechaun.

The moral of the story was never trust a Leprechaun.

Yes. Sorry for the long read,…….

Great grandma owned a very old house like almost 100 yrs old, remodeled multiple times. The road is where all the old Victorian style houses were in town, but before that it was sort of the “strip” or place to be, for nightlife etc, circa early 1900s.

During this time, there is an old story every family knew on that road, that was passed down, about a woman, maybe a prostitute, who wore a red dress, and was suspected of throwing her baby down this well before meeting her dismise and “disappeared.” Some said they heard she had an affair.

People living on the road, once all the houses were built decades later, would report seeing a woman in a red dress in the window of this house, all the way up til my grandmother passed in the 90s and the house was given up to the city for historical preservation. Local PD even told their guys the place was haunted, dating back 50+ years.

Family members all say since they were kids theyd wake up in the middle of the night and a woman in a red dress would be walking through the house, or standing at an upstairs window. Families that owned the house before reported the same. Grandmother would never talk about it. And my father would not let me enter the house without him. The house was truely horror movie creepy, and I remember it like it was yesterday, and that was 30 yrs ago.

Scary part……House was built over a sealed stone well. Confirmed by going under the crawl space. My father and his cousins found it when they were all kids, and no one ever wanted to talk about it.

That house has so many stories…..
