We are looking at a couple VMAX storage solutions and synchronous IO between them using VPLEX. We have a couple locations that are about 30 miles apart and each location would house a VMAX. Our current service provider is telling us that the required 5ms latency for VPLEX is unheard of and they cannot provide it. I know for a fact that it can be done because I've talked with a guy doing it between Oregon and Denver.
Anyone else using VPLEX? What kind of distance are you running and what type of WAN connections are you using? |

I've done it with two VPLEXs and Brocade 7800 FCoIP switches over MPLS.
The guy that is doing it between states is probably doing it over dark fiber. With the correct long haul gig-e adapters you can do that shot without any other gear in the middle. It can be done, and it can probably be done that that distance over MPLS. If your provider can't do that see what other last mile options they might have like SONET. |

It just bugs me when a salesmen leaves with requirements and then comes back saying "we spoke to our engineers and they say you're full of crap" when I know damn well it can be done and is being done. If you don't want to play the game we'll find someone else that will. Thanks for sharing your experience. |
