+1 People talk about Cortes conquering the Aztecs like it was some kind of tragedy these days. The guy did the world a favor. EDIT: Typo. |
People forget that the real reason Cortes succeeded was not simply because of European arms/armor/diseases. It was also because all of the other tribes that had been terrorized by the Aztecs threw in with Cortes in order to take them out. |
I thought it was just incredible, but a friend with generally similar tastes in movies didn't like it. I liked it because of the incredible survival mindset of not only the main characters but the entire tribe as well. Everyone back then was incredibly tough, compared to the easy lives we lead today. |
I liked it, and everyone I know who saw it liked it also. I thought Mel did an amazing job on it. |
Unfortunately, the definitive versions of Apocalypto, The Passion of the Christ (and Pan's Labyrinth) are not in English, and I don't know that English-dubbed versions are even forthcoming. I understand a director's desire for subject fidelty but movies are primarily a visual medium and no matter how you slice it, unless you speak Maya, Aramathean (or Spanish), your attention to these films is inevitably divided between a carefully composed picture and action, and reading a bunch of words down at the bottom of it. |
| After watching Das Boot and a ton of Japanese horror movies I really just follow subtitles sub conscientiously. I really did not care for the dubbed version of Das Boot. What was funny is I watched Ju-On with subtitles and dubbed English at the same time and the two only roughly correlated most of the time. |
Agreed, but I was speaking in terms of contemporary movies that could have been made in English but weren't, for "artistic" reasons. There are no dubbed versions that I know of. |

The movie was so engaging that I don't think I really noticed that it was subtitle (of course I did, but it just wasn't a hinderance). Pretty spectacular undertaking. Watch the extras to see how it was made and the lengths he went to with this movie. it was beautiful to watch. |
I know that they are selling Pan's Labyrinth subbed in English but the movies are better subbed if you ask me. I wanted to see Apocalypto but never got the chance it looked really good. |
I won't proclaim it as the best movie ever, but it's beautifully filmed, filled with amazing sights, and a good story. I think it's a pretty dam good experience. |
