My girlfriend goes in tomorrow for some tests to see if she has appendicitis.
If she has to have it removed: How long is she in the hospital? How long is she in bed at the house? How long until she can return to work (she is an ESE Kindergarten teacher)? I'm sure the Dr. will go through these with her, but I'm typical Arfcom fashion I am asking for your experiences.

I was in the hospital about 6 days and out of work for about a week and a half after that, about half of which I was just about bedridden.
Mine wasn't done laproscopically, though. If she has it done that way, she'll probably be home in a day and back to work in maybe 3. |

Mrs. Heuristic's was-
- An emergency appendectomy done laproscopically - in and out of surgery in less than 2 hours - Held overnight for observation, released the next morning - no lifting of jackshit for 2 weeks - 100% today No sweat really...then again it wasn't me! |

Former girlfriend got sent home from the ER after being told she was having unusually strong menstrual cramps.
Later that evening after she was curled up in a ball puking her guts out from the pain it was an ambo ride for a hot appendectomy. Old school surgery, got the scar, three or four day recovery IIRC. |

By 3pm, I was in serious pain and got driven to the hospital. They did some bloodwork and whisked me into the OR within a couple hours of arrival. |

That's how mine went down. The worst part was sitting around the ER in pain waiting for surgery. I was there hours before I got taken to the ER. I was walking the halls outside my recovery room within hours of the surgery's completion and home before lunch the next day. |

Had mine taken out in 1989. Was in the Hospital for at least 3 days and was In pain for 2 weeks. I'm sure it's a lot different now. That's exactly my experience...and it was in 1989 also. I watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels a couple of weeks after the surgery and thought I was going to die. You don't realize how much you use the abdominal muscles until something like that happens. |

Mine was oldschool.
The pain of the infected appendix was worse than recovery. Was in hospital overnight, then out next day. On the sofa for a day or two, then gingerly up and around. Took about 6 weeks before I could do pushups and situps. Surgery with general usually takes a few months to totally recover. |
| Mine ruptured, nearly killed me. Intense pain over the area and so sick I was delerious. I was in for a week. The fatty tissue under incision didn`t heal properly. On my first follow up appointment, Doc reopened incision and I had to pack it with saline soaked gauze twice a day until it closed up on it`s own. I don`t remember how long that went on but it seemed like forever. |

March 3rd this year. Went to ER with stomach pains. Was given scrip and sent home, was told i had a stomach bug that was going around. 2 Days later I go back barely able to stand. Am told I'm going in for emergency surgery. Appendix burst while in the ER and had to wait another hour and thirty before I went under the knife. Dr said it was a pretty bad blow out and really messy inside but they still did it larthoscopic(sp). I was being pumped with antibiotics in both arms. I was in the hospital for 8 days total. Was out of work for another week and a half after that. In short, it fuckin sucked. I'd never had a thing wrong with me before that, that I hadn't caused. Broken bones and stuff, never anything serious. Then I go to the emergency room because I have this stomach ache that I cant explain and I'm going into surgery shortly after. Went back to work finally March 26th.
Friends came up to visit and brought ammo as a get well gift |
I read somewhere that some appendicitis was being cured with antibiotics.

I had mine out 3 weeks ago. Went in with bad localized pain in lower right side, Ct scan showed bad appendix. It was supposed to be laproscopic but I ended up needing and incision as well. I spent overnight for observation and left the next morning. A few days of being really sore and a kick ass bruise. Took about a week off of work and I am almost 100% now. If I didn't have to be cut I would have healed much quicker. The worst part was it happened the second day of deer season |

Perforated (Ruptured) - OR time about an hour, hospital stay 3-5 days, antibiotics for 7-10 days.
Nonperforated - OR time about 30-45 minutes, overnight stay, no antibiotics beyond what is given right before the surgery. OR times are pretty close between laparoscopic & open, and hospital stays are usually close as well (at least in our institution) Recovery time varies, but typically back to somewhat normal in about 2 weeks, mostly you are really sore. |

Ruptured. White blood count >30,000 when I went in. Most of my organs were shutting down. I could not pee. My lower back was hurting, like I just over did a workout or something. Did not even have a fever.
I had to have 2 surgeries. One to cut that darn thing out. Another to flush out my inards with water. I was really infected! I was in a total of 13 days. Weak for about 4-more and then light dut at work for 7 days. 100% now, but darn that was a rough few weeks! Worst part was I missed the opener of dove season! |

I had emergency surgery to remove mine when I was 21 or so.
- Admitted to hospital at about 6am - Surgery at 8am - Woke up with a big gash in my stomach - Out of hospital at noon the next day - Back at work the next day I was sore as shit and it felt like my guts were going to fall out if I coughed or laughed hard but the quicker you get up and moving the better off you are as long as you don't over do it. I felt a hell of a lot better after the surgery than I did before. I could barely stand up when I got to the hospital and I walked out just fine the next day. |
| Depends on if they have to open her up fully or if they can do it laparoscopically. Mine was able to be done through the laparoscope. I was in the hospital 24 hours for observation then they sent me home. The procedure was on a Saturday and I was back at work (office work) by the following Thursday. At my follow-up a couple weeks later the doc said he was surprised that I was back at work so soon, he would have recommended a full week off. |
