OK, please settle a debate regarding building elevation views (exterior).

When looking east toward a 'west' facing wall,
Is the elevation view labeled:

A) West Elevation OR  B) East Elevation

Thanks!!

Not sure what you're asking. When looking at an elevation, it is labeled. If you're looking at a west elevation and want to see an east elevation, turn to the appropriate page.

ETA After reading your question several times, I would have worded it differently, the answer is West.

I believe it would be a West elevation.
The label is referring to the direction the wall is facing, not you.

ETA:

From Wiki... Each elevation is labelled in relation to the compass direction it faces, e.g. the north elevation of a building is the side that most closely faces north.

Not an architect but my understanding is the elevation is the way the surface most closely faces. So, if the WALL faces west, it's a west elevation, though you're "looking" towards the east.

When I have seen them I am pretty sure it is labeled the direction the wall is facing.

Sort of like looking at a car, the left side is your right if you are standing in front of the car looking at it.

Of course, if the floor plan is properly marked with notation indicating elevation view, it's a moot point.

It's west.

I'm a registered Landscape Architect.

The label is based on what side of he building it is...

You're drawing the western side of the building facade. West Elevation.

Direction it faces or is on.
Kinda like sitting offshore of California looking at the coast. Your facing East but looking at the west coast.

It isn't the direction you're looking, it is the direction the wall faces. East facing, you're perspective is from the west, and vice versa.

This. Label correctly and reference in plan.

West Elevation.

In the industrial world, we go one step further and state which way the "view" would be facing in a title/subtitle on drawing. MPS123 Elevation- looking north.

Not an architect, but I work in construction and read plans almost daily. West facing elevation would be labeled West Elevation.
