Alright, so it's time for some infamous GD advice.  Long story short, within the last week I was terminated from my job. GD would love that story, but right now is not the time. It needs MS paint for full details.

So I am now seeking a career in IT/computers. This is not up for discussion. I know how GD feels about this field. Computers are my skill. Before I have only worked dead end jobs, just because they were easy to get. Over the last 4 years I have started a website & Teamspeak server that I host for me & friends to game on. I do not do the gaming as much as I enjoy running the technical aspects of the computer systems. I have lots of experience in knowledge with detailed system security/network administration. I have been heavily looking at sc.works (SC employment/jobs website), craigslist, & indeed.com. I also tracked down a lead from a friend on a company looking for a "lead penetration tester".

A lot of these jobs I have the experience they are looking for. I currently do not have any college degree or certifications, though I have been studying torwards CCNA. I feel I have a good chance to get interviews at a lot of them I plan to submit for. My problem then becomes, I don't know which one would be the best to work for. Again I have never worked a computer job before, except what I do in my spare time as a hobby for running my website. If anyone is interested to see what I have compiled for resume & cover letters, I would be glad to share.

I really want this one job as a lead security penetration tester at a local business less than 20 minutes away. However I don't know how to handle the situation if another job gives me an offer first. I know I could tell them I am waiting to hear back from the other job, but how long is acceptable to ask a job to wait to hear from another?

Any advice on how to pick the best job? I really would prefer security testing type stuff, but i'm really open to anything networking/systems administration related.

edit:website is allin1gaming.net if GD wants to look at it.

If you want to work 100 hours weeks and be fired when there is a security breach even though the breach is because the company wouldn't listen to your advice, pen testing is a good choice. It will pay very well and people are very smart in the field.

If that doesn't sound good stick to more main stream it. There are lots of areas with good pay and good hours you seem to fit well into. Remember the tech world is smaller than you think. Agreeing to take a job and not taking it has the potential to bite you in the ass really hard later.

pick one that you think is a good fit. 60 hours of fun a week is lots better than 45 hours of boring.

I would try to get the interviews first before worrying about the flood of job offers.

Good luck.
