I'll be getting married within the year and I'd like to move somewhere with more lax gun laws. However, being an Orthodox Jew, I have to be within walking distance to an Orthodox shul and I'd like the community to also have a religious school. There are also a few places my future wife refuses to move to, Anything north of Illinois(where we currently live) is out, as well as the entire south-west. Other than those considerations, we're open to anywhere else.

And I'd consider Texas, But it doesn't have OC, so that puts it lower on the list of prospective states. ETA: I don't mind the South-West, But it reminds my SM of Iraq, and she doesn't have fond memories of it. |

For your consideration: Norfolk, Va - Ghent area. Synagogues to walk to (based on visual assessment of AO) and Bob's Gun Shop is within walking distance of Ghent section of Norfolk and has a small indoor range. May be a dicey walk Bobs GS depending on route chosen, but should be manageable to identify a decent walking route. Virginia is a pro-gun State. Montana Synagogues Most appear to be reform Synagoge congregations, but Chabad-Lubavitch of Montana in Bozeman might fit your criteria. Montana might not fit any preconcieved notions of a typical Jewish community, but overall you would fit in more than you think.
More men here wear beards and hats than anywhere else I have lived.

The State of Washington is OC as is next door neighbor Idaho. Washington requires a 5 day wait for handgun purchases, but that's about it for the idiot gun laws. Idaho is full out a free state. |

Here in San Antonio, The Chabad Shluchim and Misnagdim pack heat and wear cowboy boots...seriously. We all go shooting from time to time. Of course, as cool as that is, it really doesnt overcome the fact that most of the communities that are like this are often smaller and in the south. It makes being shomer harder. Much harder.

Pacifism isnt really a part of Orthodox Judaism. To answer you question though, in Israel, in particular, you have some groups of Orthodox who are not fans of the fact that the modern State of Israel is (contrary to popular belief) a secular nation and some groups dont wish to serve a secular nation (or have a belief that it is in G-d's hands) of course, you also have some groups of Orthodox who go out of their way to serve. |

Theres a handful of messianic 'synagogues' in N Dallas/Richardson/Plano that all have more hebrew on them than a drunk cougar wandering around the mall holding her black amex. There is at least one orthodox shul around here though, I just haven't spotted it yet. If you never want to deal with shitty, icy weather, look into San Antonio instead. Plano/Dallas is generally pretty nice, but we get a real winter. It's currently 16 fucking degrees outside and everything is covered in ice. The entire Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex is essentially shut down at least through tomorrow. |

| Just for the record, AZ doesn't look at all like Iraq, except maybe around Yuma. Not all deserts are the same - Iraq (most of it) is lowland alluvial plains, while Arizona is upland rocky desert. Parts of Nevada and NM do look a little like Iraq, but honestly, even the worst parts of the US don't have nearly enough garbage to make me think I'm back there. |

currently I live in NY - long Island Your options are numerous depending on what your looking for (religious level - community - weather - gun rights) I would not recommend anywhere near the 5 boroughs lol - although I believe you mentioned upstate is not in the books - plus financially it is taxed and fee'd to death up here = 2 bedroom apt $2150 + utlities is the norm, and it only gets worse TX = many option, although I have a friend who relocated to Houston and has been really enjoying the area, not to mention the cost of living from NY - I have friends who have been there 20 plus years and aint going nowhere VA = There is a couple nice communities in VA, I would message chapperjoe for details, he is familiar with the area MD = also has numerous communities from Chabads and in every other direction North & South Carolina = im not familiar with but I would put a grand on finding a chabad or better GA = plenty of communities, im most familiar with Savannah my friend is the Rabbi there - I can put you in touch. GA is great, its quiet, nice, slow, and allows you to really enjoy g-ds country (as are most southern states - country music aint no bullshit) FL = most parts of FL will have orthodox, reform, etc = I am from Miami, and plan on relocating there soon, but I am friends with the Rabbi in Jacksonville, real nice community - also there are some more in Orlando (right near Spikes Tactical - great people, I bring them BBQ from GA all the time lol), Tampa, and others = West Palm on down you should be able to find a nice mix as well (Boca, Ft Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miami, Aventura, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Key West, Etc I am looking at Miami Dade County - affordable, nice mix, kosher restaurants and supermarkets + more within driving distance, nice and warm, affordable housing, and not to mention other Jewish arfcommers (great for shtf) I would check out http://www.youngisrael.org/ http://www.chabad.org/ http://www.jewishfederations.org/ http://www.walk2shul.com/ feel free to contact me anytime, I am always available to help any way I can |
