If gout or pseudogout, or arthritis. Colchicine and allopurinol (or uloric) will help. Also, antiinflammatories such as NSAIDs, short term. Have an Xray taken to rule out anything worse (my associate had a fracture turn out to be a plasmacytoma - dead in two months).
