| I posted this in the Do It Yourself forum, but no response. I have a POS 2003 Ford Taurus that the AC Clutch seized up on. I usually try to do most things myself, but I do not have much experience with this. I am thinking I need to replace the AC compressor, and clutch. I found them on the Pep Boys website. Compressor with clutch. Is this something I can do myself or get someone else to do it. From the looks of it on the website it comes assembled with the clutch already. I am going to change the serpentine belt also, because it smoked real bad. Thanks |

you can install it yourself, but you will need someone with an a/c machine to evacuate the freon before you remove the compressor. after you have reinstalled the compressor you will then need to recharge the system. This, and I do believe the new compressor will have oil in it. |

Most new comps will have oil in the sump. It will tell you if it does or not. You usually have to add a few more ounces to the system even with the stuff in the comp.
You will need a set of AC gauges and a vacuum pump... Also need a recovery unit if there is still refrigerant in there. Technically it is illegal for an un licensed peoron to remove, recover or recharge a A/C system. It is also illegal to vent refrigerant to the air. It is legal for a person to "top off" a A/C system and the limit to the amount one can fill is the size of those little cans. Use more than one and you could get your dog shot!
Do, the install yourself if you want and then take it to someone for charging. Yes, replace the belt. |

Add the correct type and amount of lubricant per specific system specifications My understanding is you pour what you have into a clean container to check if it has the proper amount. Not sure what that is on my car. |
