My oldest daughter bought Mom & Dad's old house, The one I grew up in. They are both passed.

The bathroom tub/shower faucet is in need of new washers, (She is redoing the whole bathroom) and I will be showing her how it is done. The trouble is that It has literally 30+ years since I worked in/on this bathroom.
And I need to remove the escutcheons to get at the valves, to replace the washers inside.....I just don't remember how to do it!!

As you can see by my crappy cellphone pics they are tapered...not easy to get a grip on.

They are Kohler brand faucets.

Do they unscrew? If so, how do I grip them without damaging them or the tile??

Or do they "Pop-off"???? Again how do I not damage then and/or the tile behind them???

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You!

There should be a small set screw on the bottom of them.

those unscrew

the correct tool is a strap wrench, but most of the time, (mine anyways) they dont grip hard enough, so I throw a towel over it and use channel locks

I just did one a few weeks ago. They unscrew. Get a strap wrench if needed. To remove the stems ou need to get  faucet socket. Grab a set at harbor freight for 10 bucks . In the middle diverter valve there should be a plastic washer. Without it it will not work. I only found out her was one because mine was gone and I figured out it was missing after it would not work.

That a pretty common set and there plenty of parts for it.

Unless she is in love with that pink tile, I would rip it out and put in a temperature balancing ADA compliant system.

Of course, I don't always take the path most traveled..............

Thanks for all of the help everyone!

She is just out of College (All paid for by herself, through her hard work & dedication) and still on somewhat of a budget.

I suggested that the tile could go, or be colored even...but she thinks it's OK for now. the calking needs redoing (Badly), but for a 60+ year old job...it's in great shape.

She has already stripped the old wallpaper (Mom caught the remodeling bug in the 70's...poorly!) fixed the dents & holes & repainted it. I installed a more modern toilet & sink + Vanity for her.

She is quite a great young woman, and I'm just trying to help her out (Like a dad should), but I haven't lived in this house in 30+ years, and it is sometimes hard to remember what is what in it after all of that time & 2 other homes.

Thanks!
