I need to permanently attach a flash hider to my Colt 14.5" barrel to make it legal.  Can you just have it pinned on or does it have to be welded, or both?  What can be done without damaging the finish?

Thanks

To my knowledge, as long as it's permanently attached, it's legal. Pinning would seem to meet this requirement. When I discussed this w/ my local gun-guru, he said pinning one on would make it legal length - never stated anything about welding it. I believe some mfg's weld simply for added "insurance", but pinning is a permanent method of attachment in itself.

Actually, BATF has approved the "pin & weld" method, but has never approved (to my knowledge) pinning only.  Of course, BATF's opinion is just that until it's held up in court, but court costs will be MUCH more expensive than having the FS attached with an approved method.

When you say "pin & weld", do you mean weld over the pin so it cannot be removed?

Weld over the hole that pin was inserted to close it and also to "fuse" the pin to to the brake.
