Curious if ARFCOM thinks this description is misleading or just normal GB shenanigans:
<gun brand> <model name> <caliber>
Used In Very Clean Condition with Box Auction photo shows a correct factory box for <gun brand> including manual and the little envelope holding the big-brother fired cartridge. Upon receipt, box is for <gun brand> <different model> <different serial number> and fired cartridge info matches the box. Now it's true the seller never explicitly said "matching box" so I'm sure s/he's on solid legal ground, but curious what ARFCOM thinks - worthy of complaint and/or reduced feedback or ? |

Did you make the purchase for the gun or for the box? ETA: As in, is this some sort of collectible or is this something you're going to take to the range? I've never kept any of my gun boxes. Am I doing it wrong? This. It probably depends upon this. Is it a WASR or a 1964 SP-1? |

With box = original box serialed to the gun With non-matching box = Correct style factory box for the gun, non-matching serial or caliber. IMHO Quoted:

I'd personally ignore it and move on, but I'm not picky about that and can't think of a reason why it's important that the serial number on the box needs to match that on the gun if I'm planning on discarding the box. I guess I just look at the box as something that that which I wanted happened to be packaged in for shipping. YMMV ETA: I guess I can see where it would be annoying as it was listed "with box". I guess my waffling puts me square in the "Meh" camp. |

IMHO at work sell 5K+ guns a year on GB yeah once in awhile get a trade in with a non matching or No SN No Label box we make that fact very obvious in the desription |

The people "who never keep any of their gun boxes" are why certain guns with their original packaging / boxes / manuals may eventually be worth much more down the road than just the gun alone. You may think you aren't going for a collectible item, but sometimes even a common item is more valuable years down the road because of the period packaging that came (and stayed) with it. Of course, "keeping all the boxes" can also lead to eventually getting to be on your own episode of Hoarders, so you have to exercise your own judgment on that. (But if the sale description said "with box," I would be expecting it to be the box that it originally came with. Like Substandard noted, throwing in any old box should be indicated by saying something like "with non-matching (or non-original) box.") |

Ok, how about a dollar value? ~$400 selling price - would $40-50 be reasonable? IOW, how much should I ask the seller to refund? or what would ARFCOM suggest as a remedy? FWIW, the one magazine which was included was LEO-marked (without prior disclosure either) - which doesn't cause me any legal issues, but which could have been a problem for someone in a different location. I'm not looking for anything for that, but I feel it should also have been listed! |

LEO marked mag thing just ads to it , we always disclose a item hs LE marked mags as some people simply do not want them , guy is shifty However he might well tell ya to pound sand as it is fairly common for GB buyers to come back a few days later claiming ( normally insignificant or non existent as they refuse to supply pics or any proof ) issue and want to extort money back for positive feedback |

I'm not after $$$ but my first choice is the right box and I don't think he has it to swap out, so I don't know what he could do to make it right other than refund some money. I'm totally open to ideas - I'd take extra (especially non-LEO-marked) magazine(s) or something like that? I sent the following off Thursday night - no response yet: Thanks <name> – the pistol arrived today and I picked it up from my FFL. I was a bit surprised that the box and fired cartridge don’t match the pistol. Both appear to be from a <OtherModelPistol> - was there a mixup in the packing perhaps?
(I also would have appreciated knowing before purchase that the magazine was marked law enforcement only – though that doesn’t appear to be an issue in my state.) I don't think I've ever had less than an A/A+ GB experience, so don't recall leaving less - but as-is, I feel like this is below average! |

Took a few days and a few tries to re-connect with seller, but they offered full refund due to mismatched box. I pointed out that error was on their end, so I'd expect them to pay return shipping and re-transfer fee from FFL - and asked if they'd refund 10% instead. They agreed and credited $40 back to my card, so I left A+ feedback with a note explaining that there'd been a problem for which they offered a full refund but I elected to keep the gun and we settled on a mutually agreeable resolution.
Lesson learned I guess - I'll always explicitly ask from now on if box matches! Thanks ARFCOM for the feedback and guidance! |
