I saw a very cool dog a while back in the back of a truck at a gas station and went over to the owner. He said it was a short haired Australian Shepherd. I have been trying to do some research and can not find any info on the short hair version of this breed. Does anyone know anything about them? It was a great looking dog, and he said it was the best dog he had ever had. I am interested in tracking one down if I can find one.  Thanks for any help.

Could you mean "Blue Heeler" aka "Australian Cattle" dog?  Never heard of a breed called a short haired Australian shepherd.

This one is laying behind me right now.  She's a blue merle. Never heard of a short haired variety.

I also have a 5yr old "Blue Merle". Aussies shed allot, so I take mine to the groomer every 4-6 wks. His hair stays short.

Great dog. Listens well, loyal, protective, smart, great with kids.

Aussie's are smarter than most peoples kids. Awesome dog. I had an Aussie/Queensland mix. Most amazing dog I've ever had.

Had one for 14 years - VERY possessive of his yard and family, VERY good at alerting me if anyone came into the yard, near the yard, looked at the yard, could see the yard from 100 meters out, etc.

Seriously though, he was a good dog - his only problem was my own failure to be more forceful in his training and socialization as a puppy.  That led to some aggression issues that I would have preferred to avoid, but even with that he was a very good and loyal dog.  Cancer took him in the end, which just tore me up.

Mine is a cross between an Aussie and a Border Collie. Got the long tail from mom and the beautiful merle from dad.

That's ACD is a spitting image of mine; altough mine's getting up there in age. She's really starting to show it.

My family had one for years, she died of old age. Once they take to a property or a family it BELONGS TO THEM and are very protective of it.

Aussies are great, I miss mine.

Never heard of the short haired version, but +1000 on what everyone here has said. They are fantastic dogs. I miss mine so much. I have two blue heelers and they are good dogs but not as willing to please as a austrailian shepherd. But they are energetic, so take that into consideration when buying one. They do need a lot of excercise but are so willing and loving and protective. Most are a perfect mix of traits.

My mother just got a Mini Aussie. I have never been a small dog person but this dog is great. She has a full grown Aussie and Blue Healer, all working dogs. That said the mini fits right in and is fast on her feet around the horses.

Great dogs. Great around the kids, great inside manners, great truck sense, and SMART as they come for dogs.

I want to also say that a well trained auss when working cattle is an amazing sight to see. The natural instinct combined with undying devotion to what they are doing makes for the best friend you could ever have from horseback.

This is Franklyn "Buddie" Warner.

He thinks everyone is dumber than him, most especially Stupid Other Dog (read: Me). In fact, he'd like to show Stupid Other Dog that he's more deserving of pack leadership, so he challenges Stupid Other Dog on a daily basis... to, you know, benefit the welfare of the pack.
Buddie doesn't like strangers, (most especially policemen, God Save me), stupid other dogs, sheeps (read: cats) or you walking willy-nilly in back of him without him knowing where you are going.

What he does like is having his back scratched at the place where his tail would have been had God given him one. He likes steak, medium rare. He DOESN'T like Leftists, hippies, Obama voters/Obama himself, and random, unwatched, uncontrolled groups of geese, sheep or other flock animals.

Unless I'm going blind that is a red merle not a blue.

I've had Aussies almost my whole life. Current is a blue merle female mini. Have had black tri's, a red tri, a red merle, and now my mini blue merle. They are awesome dogs and very smart. My female now tries to herd my twin two year old boys and grabs onto their pant legs to keep them from going anywhere.

Reason #1, 2nd one, I caught her in a hotel room with another man getting dressed, literally.

The consensus seems to be that Australian dogs rule, be they ACD or shepherds.  I have a red heeler (ACD) that is my absolute LIFE DOG!

got a black-tri and love her dearly. Smart and the best family dog one could ask for!
