Love it or hate it?

Used to love it, now I think it's just a pain in the ass and realize that no matter how hard I try I still suck at it.  Now I hate it.

Your thoughts?

Waste of time, I'm on gravel almost every day.

I wash, throw out the trash and vacuum but I don't detail.

I hate it.

The monkeys in back detail my car...  I just wash it.

Twice a year my truck gets detailed - whole nine yards.

Once a year my truck goes to the body shop. Gets the scratches, dents and rusts of the year fixed.

My truck, after the detailing - looks like its brand new.

'08 F250 King Ranch Edition. I use it as a work truck, so it gets beat - hard. I just go above and beyond to take care of it.

I enjoy it.  At least until I find a new scratch.

I try to keep up with it, but don't freak out if shit happens.  It's tougher if you don't have a garage.

On the way home after purchasing my car (new), some hippie dude side scraped me on the free way.

The coolest part about it is that Progressive insurance made it there and picked me up with in 10 minutes in LA rush hour traffic (driving on the shoulder)

They also had a Bently/Merc shop fix it

Two weeks after I finally got it home, someone scratched the fuck out of my paint trying to pry off the plastic logo that was stuck to my car with a foam sticky pad

Then a few months later I parked it in the garage with the windows down, the dogs thought they were going for a ride and jumped in scratching booth doors

Owned the car for 10 years now, never really cared about a chip.  Still love driving it every day I start it up

I just use optimum no rinse and over the counter mequires tech wax/etc

He was flipping out.  I told him: Look, I'm not an asshole but I want this fixed.

Mean while he was begging me not to report it and that he would pay me cash.

Nope, not on my car with 17 miles..

It's truck.
Just hose out the beef jerky wrappers and the Mountain Dew cans.

Absolutely pointless.

IF you stay on top of it you will see results... your 10 year old car will look a year old.

A huge part of this is knowing what is bad for your paint.  About 99% of the things that most people do to their car is absolutely horrible for the finish... soft cloth car washes, for example.  All the grit and shit from the last 100 washes gets ground into your paint and scratches the fuck out of it.

Edit:

If you would like to know the proper way to wash your car, see this gentleman's FIVE PART video series on washing your car.  Yes, five parts.

I had a shitty truck for 10 years that wasn't worth washing, I tried to keep the new one clean, that lasted about a month before I said fuck it. Its very dry and dusty here and an hour of car washing effort is gone the first time the wind blows. I just run by the car wash and hose the dirt off once a month. The inside is perfect though.

I used to be very meticulous about detailing but I've gotten lazy with it over the past few years. Also my clear coat is soft and thin from the factory so there's only so much extensive polishing I feel comfortable doing. On a related note, I just placed an order for some zaino z5 (even though a already have a drawer full of LSPs)

LOL, fuck NO!

I got screwed that way with an uninsured, likely undocumented driver.  Fortunately it was a beater, but that's the last time I cut anyone a break.

Over a 10 year period, "staying on top of it" involves hundreds of hours of work.

Unless you're attempting to preserve a high-dollar classic car, what you're describing is a fool's errand.

That's why I never clean my house.  I just burn 'em down when the paint starts to peel.

My toyota 4x4 has very clean, shiny dents and scratches.

27 year old original paint still has some life left in it.
