I haven't bought Legos since I was a kid, but I remember the price being almost prohibitive compared to the number of blocks in the kits...  I can't even imagine how much the blocks for this costs if the prices are anything like they were then.

That's why you buy legos in bulk on eBay and not in individual kits.  You buy them in lots of lbs.
