So I've read lately about how an M-16 bolt carrier is better because it's heavier and slows the action and makes it better some how. Then today I see these low mass bolt carries that cost a small fortune and I'm now confused as to why they are better. They even had M-16 carriers that were milled out to lighten them, but I didn't see any AR-15 carriers milled down. So what is the skinny on what is better and why is it better. I have spent the last 34 years under the misinformed opinion that an AR-15 bolt carrier was perfectly good, no need to change a thing. |

Way I've heard it is the increased weight is for reliability and also better for suppressed use. Low mass is for increasing the possible cyclic rate and for competition use where getting as many rounds off as rapidly as possible is the most important factor. |

I used to always believe the M-16 BCG, with heavy buffer was the way to go for softening up recoil.
But I just put together a 14.5" midlength with a low mass bolt carrier group and adjustable gas block (also have a JP silent captured spring buffer system that replaces the standard buffer and spring. The first time I fired it, the gun shot so smoothly and quietly I didn't even think it cycled. I checked the chamber and sure enough it did. It literally recoils half has hard as a standard AR15. No lie. The key is you need an adj. gas block in conjunction with the low mass BCG to realize the benefit. I have my gas choked down about halfway. Throws brass at 4 oclock unsupressed and 2 oclock suppressed. Less gas in the face too. |
