Since we dont have a general "military forum" I am posting this here.. I am probably going to MEPS next week, and my USAF recruiter said that the earliest I would likely be going to basic was 4-6 months...this seems like a long time...is that true? Seems like if  you were willing to go ASAP (which I am) they used to get you out MUCH quicker than that..

basic runs year round. your tech school does not. depending on your afsc you will go to basic and graduate just before your class start date. so yea it can be a few months

just go back and say ill be a 3P you will be out of there in no time.

Oh believe me I don't...but it's weird cuz I pulled out all the cards..telling him that my FIL is a Retired USAF Captain, the whole 9 yards..according to my FIL and other USAF Officers he CAN gurantee it to me, but he says that I have to go to MEPS with a list of 5 jobs, any of which I would accept. He says that there is a 99% chance that I will have a guranteed job before I ship for BMT. Once again..

You will have a job before you go unless you go Open Gen, mech, etc. I had to wait 9 months until I went to BMT.

My recruiter tried pulling the same shit with me.  I knew he was full of crap because Security Forces always has people coming and going.  What recruiters have to do is fill slots.  If enough people are going to SF, and services needs more people they will push them towards them.  You can ask for the quick ship option if they still have it.  Also, there may have been a glut of troops coming through the tech school, and there is a back log.  I enlisted in Nov 99 but there wasn't any room at the SF tech school until at least May 00.  If that's the case there's not much you can do about that.  Enjoy your time until you're a civvie.

Yes, I realize that, but you said "enjoy your time until you're a civvie". I AM a civvie right now, I will soon NOT be a civvie. Just to clarify, I'm joining the USAF enlisted as a Security Forces Airman..

I reread my post.  I meant to say, Enjoy your time left as a civvie.  It's not easy typing with a 2 year old bouncing off the walls around you.

Also, I was an SP for 8 years on active duty and Im in the Air Guard now.  You have no idea what you're in for.

I can relate..I have a 2 year old as well..and a 2 month old. Typing at home is damn near impossible. I have no idea what I am in for, huh? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?..I think I MAY be able to relate..you see at my current job I make shit and pennies for pay, have NO benefits, 5 days of paid vacation per YEAR, and make $1700/month..everything is a big fucking beurocratic process here as well, taking a year to get anything approved or done, the uniform requirements are bullshit (or laughable, depending on how you look at it) and I work with the dumbest people I have ever met (literally)...sound like I'm stepping up, or making a lateral career move?

ETA: Mind if I PM ya?

For me, my return to civilian life is far more retarded than my 7+ years in SF.  I will say that you should look at other AF options.

Suprisingly, I have met people who wanted Security Forces and ended up in Air Trans.  There is a tech school class (referred to as teams), every week of approximately 100 people, so there are no shortage of openings.

As for the wait, I had to wait 45 days for a waiver to process because I had LASIK eye surgery.  One reason may be due to the economy more people are entering the military, so there may be a build up of people waiting to enter.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me about the tech school or AF in general. Many here will be more than happy to help.

Best of luck to you.

I too just enlisted in the AF as Security Forces.  I don't leave until Nov. 10th.  I have been in the process since November of last year because they tried to give me the same run around.  It was hell to get any info out of my recruiter, and ended up researching everything on my own. I demanded that they book my job before I signed my contract, and also that my contract read rank E-3 based on my college credits.  I've been in DEP since last month, and everything worked out ok, but it took some prodding on my part.
