I started getting back spasms in my 30s.
Originally they would probably last maybe a day and then they would work themselves out. I've gone to the doctor for them, the doctor ordered x-rays and at the end of the visit really couldn't tell me why they occur he just gave me vicodin and Soma, neither of which I took because my stomach doesn't like them. My job is very physical and it doesn't really seem to matter what what I've done to bring them on, it seems totally random. Aside from doing pushups and situps which I already do, does anybody else have any advice? |

This is relevant to my interests.
Back started hurting after moving some furniture. After a week of constant pain I went to the doc, just sure there was something damaged. X-ray, nothing. He says back spasms. Still dealing with it two weeks after the first sign of pain, although it seems to be getting better with muscle relaxers at night and stretching during the day. |

I used to have back issues. They still flare up now and then, it's nothing like it used to be. Here's what helped me, FWIW.
1. Find a good physical therapist and work with him or her for a while. 2. Get in (or back in) the gym. This is counterintuitive, it has worked for me, David Werner and Louie Simmons, among others. 3. I spend most of my time at a desk, so switching to a stand-up desk helped me. 4. Consider seeing a Chiropractor. I have one who works with a lot of athletes. Seeing him helps when I push it too hard and hurt myself. Good luck! |
| Both of the best answers have already been posted but not together. Proper hydration and stretching. I get them too if I slack off on either and get them so bad I have to get help if I slack on both. It would be worth your money to find a good deep tissue massage therapist to loosen up the affected area, they should also be able to show you the best stretches to keep them loose. |

what do you do for a living? sit all day? overweight even 10 pounds.
happened to me in my early 40's...too much sitting, not enough excercise, thought I was in pretty good shape but was kidding myself. exercise and lose a few pounds, you will feel better. I got a dog and started walking 30-40 minutes every single day, dog was one of the best things that happened to me. |

2 ruptures and a herniation in my lower neck, ripped rotator cuff 3 times.
I have spasms about 7-15 times a day, there are excercises you can do to calm them and they do help quite a bit. I was also perscribed skleaxin*sp. Iys helps temendously and doesnot cause stomach problems like the others. |
