Do you provide your social security number for the NICS?  My FFL tells me not providing it could delay the process.

Yep, .gov has your SS# anyway.

Without it you could be screwed if your name is John Smith.  If your name is Horatio Finkelsteen, you're probably ok.

i don't know how nics specifically works, but based on my experience with b/g check databases, i can see how (especially if you have a relatively common name) not providing an ssn could delay the process a little bit.

If you have a relatively common name, or one that just happens to be shared with a felon, I guess not providing the SS might make it a little harder to identify you, and thus slow down the approval.

I provide it anyway - doesn't bother me.

My name is fairly uncommon.  I've never put my SSN on a 4473, and it's never caused an issue.

I put my SSN on there.   I still get delayed about 30 to 60 minutes.

I think the underage possession of alcohol I got when I was 20, delays it.  It doesn't show up "no-record" so I assume they kick it up to a higher level of review before approval.

Either that and/or I have a somewhat common name that might have some hits from somebody else.

That's exactly what I've been told as well.  Nothing like a little scare mongering, huh?

Nope.  No problems without it.
