Being a moderate hobbyist for 2 years now, I have had a pretty wide range of cigars I enjoy.
I always went for the fuller bodies and really enjoyed Ligas, 1926s, Anejos, Opus, Oliva Vs, and some Pepin. I guess overtime I just got fed up chasing unicos and paying for my higher end stuff. I also found that my varied humidor still consisted of nothing but stronger smokes, and I admit, every once and a while that last 3rd would sneak up on me. The Oliva V had pretty much become my go-to smoke, and anytime I grabbed an Oliva it would be a V. I had tried the G once in my infancy and remember it tasting pretty bad and bitter, and heard others with this same opinion so I kind of wrote them off. Well, I finally thought I'd give the G another try, and would finally try the O serie for the 1st time. I grabbed a small box pressed belicoso G and the O in belicoso. Turns out I loved both of them! A lot. I immediately stocked up on Gs and Os and now my largest humidor is almost exclusively Oliva. I guess they just really cornered on value and selection for my taste and budget. It's kind of nice to grab a G for an easier going morning smoke with cup of coffee and the O is wolrds apart from the V for a nice change. Now I'm wondering if this will result in a total Oliva burnout or if I finally settled on a favorite brand. There are still a lot of good smokes out there I will buy, but I guess I have found myself to be primarily an Oliva smoker and was surprised that 3 of my favorite smokes were right under my nose and took me 2 years to discover it. Anyone else have a similar experience? I usually hear people divide into a kind of Pink Floyd vs Led Zeppelin camp when it comes to blends, and people usually go fuller and stronger as they progress, but honestly I found a change in dynamics is nice. |

When I first really got into cigars, I wanted to try whatever the newest thing out there was. Now I have found that when I stray away from my typical smokes, I get disappointed. That doesn't mean I won't pick up a new one occasionally, but it takes a concerted effort and more than just recognizing that it's new. Especially since I don't smoke much from December through March, and in the summer I might average two a month now. I always go for the medium to full, but if it has been too long since I've had a really heavy one, I end up paying for it, especially if I smoke it too fast. The lighter cigars just don't do it for me. Although two summers ago when I wasn't working in the office for three weeks, I took the laptop out onto the deck and had one every day during lunch. ![]() |

I buy a lot of AJ Fernandez from CI.
I also try a lot of new cigars out, I'm not going to say I have a favorite brand. I just have cigars that I prefere more than others. I wont buy anything from Rocky Patel outside of the Prohibition line, I wont buy Macanudo, and very rarely buy Camacho. |

Right. That's why I'm calling it a bad evolution. I was kind of happy not having a favorite brand but man their price point and quality is hard to match.
I have only had the UHC and I like them but feel they can be a little rough and spicy. I have to smoke them slowly, not because of the nic, but to tame the bite down a little. They are a good smoke and I need to try some more AJ. I guess I just got annoyed with the steady price, hype, and strength of some. Go figure the newly acquired balance have the same name on the bands... I agree, I also don't like real mild smokes. I think the G, Short Stories and Tat Havanas are as gentle as I go. Just strange seeing the sudden take over and mediums taking up more residency. |
