Escapee... City broadcasted his discription and called in a National Guard MH-60 blackhawk for spotting. We recieved well over 100 calls of sightings and each time the chopper would go and bring along the HUGE crowd following it. (All pointed up saying OOOOOHHHHHHHHHH) Each time was a three ring circus. Now the funny part..........found out he was outside the city within the first hour. Duh!!! |

Damn medicmandan! That sucks bro... My last three shifts have been crazy busy, 3 shifts and 3 codes along with all the other BS.. and all 3 of them had to be nasty codes, you know what I'm talking about.. mmmmm...suction. My partner and I where the second unit on scene at the I-40 bridge collapse in Webber Falls, May of 02. 10 vehicles, 3 of which were tractor trailers and 17 people went into the water. 3 people came out. My pt out of the three asked me "has my wife came up yet" All I could tell him was we were doing everything we could. His wife was extricated from their vehicle 2 days later, still wearing her seat belt. We were there for about 14-15 hours that first day. Then the recovery operations began. 4 Firefighters, 2 medics and a ME worked 4 hour shifts on the recovery barge. OHP divers would attach cables to the vehicles as they located them, then the crane operators would lift the vehicles from the river and set them on the barge with us where the occupants where then extricated. 13 people where extricated form the vehicles, some of which where damaged beyond comprehension. The 14th was a three year old girl who was found a mile down river 3-4 days later. When they had to move the barge to position it over a vehicle, the tug would kick up a lot of stuff from the bottom, mainly personal belongings of people still 20' under you, empty car seats, dog carriers, check books, clothing, birth certificates, medications, peoples complete lives... All of us who responed or worked recovery live with that one. |

I agree with Luckystiff. One of the worst/hardest is death notifications. My partner and I got a death notification where a woman's husband and son were killed in a multi vehicle crash on the interstate. When we knocked on the door, she answered the door and said, "They're dead, aren't they". She saw the crash on the news and recognized the semi, they were driving. She was hoping she was wrong. We confirmed her fears when we made contact. That was a tough one. Colt_SBR |
| here's one for ya. guy from somewhere in africa staying at local hotel. guy doesn't know how to swim. same guy caught on surveillance video stepping off in the deep end of hotel pool. next scene, guy flailing about with about 10 other people in the pool. after 4-5 minutes of bobbing up and down, he eventually goes under and stays there...for, get this, 11.5 minutes. then someone decides that this is odd and jumps in to get the guy out. cpr, aed, no dice. nice to know that people will help out in a pinch, huh? it's things like that that make me lose faith in the human race. i saw the video after i had tagged and bagged him and he was sent off to the morgue and someone told me that there was video. after watching it, it gave me an odd sense of mortality. turns out, the guy was here on a work permit and vacationing with the same people that were in the pool with him. then the guy that did the cpr initially, also his sponsor. |
