My wife does DJ work on the weekends. She did a wedding a couple of weeks ago. Had a contract, got a deposit, etc.
Job went fine. Everyone was happy.Couple gave her a check at the end of the night.
Check comes back from the bank marked as a stop payment.
So far no luck contacting the happy couple. Wife was able to talk with the brides Mom who seemed genuinely surprised at what happened  but has not been in touch.

Is this considered a criminal act or just a civil thing?
If never paid I am pretty sure it would be civil but to write a check after services have been satisfactorily rendered and then stop payment I think it may bump over to a criminal act?
Opinions??

Every area is different.. but..

Once we hear 'contract' and / or 'deposit', it is 99% of the time a civil matter.

This is a good question.  In for the answer.

Did they give any indication that they were unhappy with her?

Agree. Civil issue. Take the happy couple to small claims court.

I wonder if someone stole their checkbook or something.

Seems like an odd way to cut costs at a wedding.

Hard to argue that kind of intent unless it was on multiple occasions. The pig-faced fat fuck of a girlfriend a friend of mine had a decade ago wrote something like 30 bad checks so she got some sort of charge I believe.

Find out where they live and go knock on their door.

Civil until you (or Vinnie) go for the knee caps.

Regular wedding. No indication that anyone was not pleased.
Couple is moving or has moved to Virgina. Maybe figure to just screw the people here as it's not worth going down there for $400.00
Brides mom works at a dinner about a 1/2 mile from here. Don't really want to give her a hard time as it is not her fault. We will make her aware of the situation though.
If this was insufficient funds it would be different. Sometimes this has happened when people are paying all the different cost of a wedding. In the past others have always made good.
To stop payment though takes an act on their part and I believe that would need to pay bank fees to stop a check payment.
We will hope that this is a mistake on their part for a few days. If nothing happens by late in the week we will have a chat with the local police and see if we can do anything.
