Do you bag your lawn clippings or just side discharge it onto the grass?
Any logic to either or?
4/18/2015 4:28:41 PM EDT
[#1]
Side discharge.  Tried the bagging once.  After emptying that thing for the 87th time and only half the yard was mowed, that was enough.

I usually bag the first couple cuttings of the season, then I get lazy and say fuck it and mulch for the rest of the summer.

I'm not a huge lawn snob though.

Not for years.  Keep the blade sharp, and there's no need for a do-over.  Sometimes I go cross grain on the second cut- makes the lawn look like a baseball outfield.  I do think the clippings help out the grass a bit, and only the tiniest bit ever washes into the gutter.

I priced the bagger for this and decided against it due to the cost. It was several thousand bux, IIRC.

I have a mulching mower but still use the side discharge.

As for the blade sharp, I have been told, as sharp as a butter knife.

I bag first cut after winter to keep the long clippings from choking the grass. The let it fly after that. My lawn isn't perfect, but it stays green.

Stupid question but those with a mulching mower do you side discharge or just let it fall down?

I bag the lawn. And side shoot the fields.

Yard tractor is a 2008 John Deer LA135.

Bag, our TWP picks them up every Monday for mulch.

Neither - mulching honda mower.

If your baggng you are wasting good organic fertilizer. Mulched clipping are good fr the soil and your grass will appreciate it.

This assumes you cut your lawn at a reasonable interval and don't leave piles of clippings everywhere that choke out he grass

Mulching mower unless it gets super long and the clippings would be too clumpy/deep and cause issues.

+100.  This. I make sure I don't let the grass get tall enough to require bagging.

Lawn may be a bit of a stretch since all I have now are weeds, but side discharge except mulching leaves in the fall.

Kind of wished I bagged so I could compost it... but oh well

I have a set of those for leaves in the fall. They work great for that.

My lawn is much to large to do that (5+ acres). As was mentioned sharp blades or mulching mowers is all you need
4/18/2015 5:17:41 PM EDT
[#32]
Forward and reverse side discharge it into the street.
4/18/2015 5:21:02 PM EDT

Sharp blade, side discharging 4' deck...and don't let it get high = no problem.

Saguaros and ocotillo don't need to be mowed or bagged.

That's pretty much me. As I have gotten older as long as long I keep the yard mowed/trimmed that good enough for me and the sammich-maker. I have better things to do than obsess over a yard.

To be honest I think the yard looks better if you don't use the grass catcher or even mulch all the time, especially in the dry months. That's usually reserved for Spring and then the Fall leaf attacks.

This.

Mulching is good for your grass as long as you don't grow it to 6" tall and cut it to 2".

Returns nitrogen and carbon to the soil, which is good for your grass.
4/18/2015 6:26:50 PM EDT
[#39]
Mow it into a pile and rake it up this time of year.  Later on I just let it "mulch".
4/18/2015 6:29:23 PM EDT
[#40]
I wait until it heads out and goes to seed. Then cut it with a sickle mower, rake it and bale it.
4/18/2015 6:31:55 PM EDT
[#41]
You should leave the clippings.  Mulching is best but side discharge works too.  Only bag if you have a disease or fungus.

You shouldn't cut off more then 1/3 of the grass blade.
4/18/2015 6:49:46 PM EDT
[#42]
Nope.
4/18/2015 6:57:39 PM EDT

2 acres would be a lot of bags
4/18/2015 7:00:02 PM EDT

Side discharge.  The bag rotted out 20 years back.

Mulch preferably. I like to keep as much N and organic matter as I can.

Bag for most of the year.
4/18/2015 7:31:54 PM EDT

I do both.

Depends on if I need the clippings for mulch or composting.

Here's a pic last year of my yard, cut at 3/4" with a reel mower and what little clippings I have are bagged.
