My uncle passed a few months ago... it looks like he started a small barbed wire collection with about 25 pieces, some of them are duplicates so I probably have about 15 to 20 unique pieces.

I plan to try and mount the pieces once I have them identified...

Update: See if this link works for a pic 4th one on the top is a Brinker Hoff Sabre Point Ribbon... Looks like Patent date was ~1881

I think I have some from the 1800's... I am just getting started... obviously not my collection or something that many people younger than 70 have much interest in...

Trying to identify these pieces is proving to be a bit of a PIA... probably why my uncle left them in his cabinet...

My Grandmother had some old barbed wire. I live where it was invented.

Historically, barbed wire was truly revolutionary.

It pretty much killed the old west.

Young Pamela Anderson as the title character in the movie "Barb Wire."  One of those movies that is so bad, it's almost good.

I am currently behind 'enemy lines' however, the family originated in Jacksboro TX... lots of barbwire in TX, probably why the museum is there and why my uncle (from TX) got hooked...

The type of responses some people feel need to be posted leave me scratching my head often too.

If it doesn't interest you, move on.

I don't have a "collection", but we do have some barbed wire we picked up at an old POW camp near where I grew up.  Germans and Italians captured in North Africa were kept there.

It was desolate enough they didn't have a prayer of running off, so they were hired out to work on local farms, the Italians painted some beautiful murals in a local Catholic church, and the guards would loan the prisoners their guns so they could go rabbit hunting to supplement their rations.

The barbed wire that was used at the camp was a style I haven't seen often elsewhere...3 points instead of the regular 2 or 4.

I have maybe 50 different types, most from the mid to late 1800's that my Grandmother collected. I want to re-mount them but just haven't made the time. I have a book with that can help identify the different types. The names are the best... It's also neat to think about the history, improvements in manufacturing, and industrialization that made the different competing designs possible.

My grandpas brother had a huge display with ID'd barbed wire dating back to the 1800's. He had it displayed at a diner in the town they grew up in, and it burned down about 10 years ago.

There's discernible differences in the different types of wire used in ww1 too though if that's your thing.  I've got a bit of German wire from a huge tangle dug up on the western front, it's surprisingly thick, stiff stuff.

British on top, german on bottom.  Not mine, image search's.

Barbed wire story.
On my first pheasant hunt we were crossing a barbed wire fence. I unloaded and put my shotgun over and proceeded to climb through. we were all aware the top wire ( non barbed ) was electrified.

As I'm climbing through the fence this huge damn Sow came out of nowhere and attacked us. I got hung up on barbed wire and in my panic got my ass electrified on the top wire.
Wasn't my best field day.

Pretty cool stuff.

I didn't know this was even a thing until my mom and I ran across a museum in McLean, TX that had a collection of it. Had to stop in and check it out. And it was on old Route 66. Devil's Rope Museum
