You are walking in a parking lot and some dude approaches you and looks like he is going to start something.
You are unarmed. What do you do? I live in the ghetto and I haven't put any real thought into fighting without a firearm. What's the most effective technique to neutralize the threat if he gets in your face? Not let him get in your face in the first place? |

| Too many variables to rely on any one thing. Ultimately it will be training and mindset that will prevail, if you have neither expect to get your ass handed to you. And if you're asking this question than it's pretty evident that you have neither, sorry but expect to have your ass handed to you. |

Run if you can. You're unarmed, dude. Who knows what the guy is packing, or if it's just one dude? I live in the ghetto and there is just one shady looking dude I see on a regular basis. I'm not going to run. Any other techniques besides shitting yourself and running away? |

Kick to the nuts ASAP. I took tae kwon do for a few years, and this is still the best strategy there is. If you're fighting a guy, and you're not factoring testicular distruction as an endgame, you're handicapping yourself. I've been taking Krav Maga for a month now. They wholeheartedly embrace Master Bobby Hill's "That's My Purse!"-do. I'm fine with that. Let the young BJJ/boxing/MT guys become pros in their combined MMA training and argue over illegal strikes. I'm an older guy with creaky joints and limited free time, and don't have any delusions about my abilities. I just want to get in better defensive shape and learn some basic techniques that work better than saying "please stop hitting me." |

First do a quick internal check for items that could possibly be used as a weapon if needed
On and around my person. If there is something I get it ready and put distance between myself and bad guy If not then still put distance between us and do a visual search of weapons on bad guy, if he has a weapon....run If he does not, the fight may or may not start depending on bad guy. Sometimes a fight just is not avoidable in which case give it all you have and end it as soon as possible |

"Give me back my purse" http://www.tvgasm.com/shows/2009/12/02/that'smypurse.jpg "I don't know you!" Beat you to the groin kick by 90 seconds. Hope you were wearing a cup. |

self-defense techniques that anyone could tell you here, won't do any good unless you practice them in a controlled environment.
My suggestion is find a dojo that fits your time schedule and get to practicing. Don't fall into the trap of this xyz system is better than all the other systems. |

start talking to yourself.
I know a woman who used to be a parole officer and she said that a lot of the black inmates (in jails) dont mess with the smaller white ones because they think they are crazy... and many play into that stereotype for their own survival. |

Craig Douglas (Shivworks) Managing unknown contacts is probably the best way to handle these situations.

Take one of these away, and the fight is over:
Vision - a thumb strike to the eyes Breathing - knife hand or punch to the throat The ability to stand - take out a knee or stomp the instep Kicks to the groin, while effective when landed, target a well-protected part of the anatomy. |
|
the priority is to remove yourself from the situation.
if you are backed in to a corner anything solid in your hand is better than just your hand a nice little tactical flashlite or pen. strikes to groin, throat, solar plexus, eyes, nose and that would probably be my prefered order. and again you are doing this to get away make them hurt bad and take your window to escape if it comes. sometimes that window will not come, I have been pissed off enough to completely ignore a kick to the nuts. sometimes you must be prepared to lose and minimize damage, if you can't avoid getting punched in the face make them punch your forehead and possibly bust their hand. clinch them in closer so they can't get any leverage behind their strikes. it can be an endurance game make it take so much energy to try and damage you that you can get away... learn submission holds, in these instances you wouldn't wait for them to submit but rather break their arm... get a concealed carry permit and avoid the whole mess. |
I hope the gents who are armed aren't advocating drawing a gun on an unarmed person because he's approaching you.
Most states have laws governing self-defense & you cannot draw a deadly weapon on an unarmed person without legal issues. If you carry a deadly weapon like a handgun or knife, you should acquaint yourself with when & why you would use deadly force. Since you don't, start with a local martial arts school like others have suggested. If the school/art you chose didn't help--try another, and another, etc. until you think you found what you need. You may need to actively look for seminars to address your interests--Michael Janich has some interesting courses & most firearms training schools have unarmed combat courses, as well. Just like there's no "magic bullet" there's no "magic martial art, move or strike" that's better than another--and survival in a true assault usually depends on situational awareness ( yours--or lack of it) and the practitioner's abilities. But again--you punch someone in the throat because he asks for a light, or your wallet--and he dies--you're going to go broke defending your actions, and Bubba may take a shine to you while you're in the clink. So, start with a local martial arts school--but be prepared to look critically at what you study & move on if you don't get what you need. |

If the guy was doing some pre assault behavior and getting in my face I would probably do a strike then leg trip takedown to knee on belly or mount, simple and effective. Even with a little grappling you can straight up ruin people who don't train.
If I didn't want to hurt him arm drag to rear naked. I was shocked at how easy it was to Arm drag and choke people |
