Ive been with DN for like 2 years this time, but I dont have DVR yet. But in order to get a DVR without spending money (as in like $299) you have to be a new customer.... So basically I have to cancel my service and become a new customer (again)  WTF!!!

Have you actually asked them for an upgrade and told them you will switch if you don't get an upgrade... they have done it for many people. They had a program for customers to upgrade for like $50.

And BTW if you cancel your service you will NOT be considered a new customer anyway.

is there a time period in which you can not be considered a " new cust " example... cancel today re-up the next..?  seems like when i saw a better deal on cable I tried getting it and was told it was only for new cust... and i would not be considered a new cust untill i was 2 months with out service..

I dont know.. but it would make since for them to do that .. to keep people like you doing exactly that..

That's correct.  If you have been a customer at any time in the last 5 years, you are considered an existing customer.  This applies to Comcast, DirecTV, and DishNetwork, at least.

Of COURSE the best deals are for new customers; it's to entice them to switch from what they've already got to the new brand.  Existing customers will usually be offered a discount on upgrades periodically, but you have to be on the ball and paying attention.  Check out one of the many websites that keeps track of current and future promotions for the TV services.

Go to thier web site and create a account. When you log-in you should have an option listed for equipment upgrades. It is called Dish-n-it-up and usually you have to agree to another year of service but should be able to get a DVR for less than $100.00.

Cable TV is the premier Broadband distribution system for the future.

Direct TV and Dish are a 1 way only system where Cable is a 2 way system.

The future is Broadband....high speed 2 way.

IP Video will enable you to purchase just the channels you want...bypassing the Cable company and Dish and DirectTV.

So Cable will be retasked to deliver High Speed Broadband, Docsis 3.0 is being finalized and it is 200 megs a second/2 way.

The only thing better is Fiber to the Home...and it's expensive.

So whether the Bells can upgrade their networks to FTTH before they lose all the broadband business to Cable's current capability is the Billion Dollar question.

That is the retail price. Under the promo you will be eligible to lease a DVR. This is why you re-up your contract. In the end you get a huge discount on the reciever and they are gauranteed you will stay a customer for another year.

Yea, DOCSIS 3.0 will go thru RG59...just not as far as it will in RG6.
RG6 is better, yet there is nothing inherently wrong with 59...unless the fitting are old and corroded, which most are by now.

But even RG59 has more potential capacity than the bells copper which is going into the home.

Docsis 3.0 will introduce channel bonding.

You take a current QAM, 6 mhz data channel, and you bond 3 or 4 together.

So in 24 mhz of bandwith you can run 200 megs/second of High Speed Internet/HDTV

Typical Cable plant is currently 750 mhz.

So you do the math, how many high speed data channels you want to run on your system.

The potential is amazing.

The only problem we ever had with Direct was having to sweep the dish out once a day or so when it snowed really hard. Anything else is just cable company hype ("OMG, I had to cut down all my trees to get signal!!")

I just get tired of the old cable versus the dish BS.  I've seen a couple people get hosed by a dish company (Dish Network and DirectTV).  My dad had a great package when he first switched to the dish and it included a few cool channels for a year free.  6 mos later they yanked his cool channels and gave him complete crap, like food channels.  They simply said too bad, it says we can change it anytime in the contract.

It's like Ford versus Chevy, and all those personal based opinions that everyone seems to have.  Fine for most conversations, but in this case it's strictly determined by where you live, who you talk to, and what experiences you've had.  Kinda like the Ford - Chevy nonsense.

I had the exact same problem with Dish Network.  Yesterday I got Direct TV for the same price but with DVR.  Dish Network didn't want to give me squat.  And I've been a customer for years.  So, F*&k you, Dish Network!

Call up and say you want to cancel.  When they ask you why say you want DVR and if you sign up with digital cable they'll give you $400 for your sat. dish and a free DVR.

You should get your free DVR and probably a couple hundred dollars credit on your account if you play it right.

Good start- I canceled min for a few months cause i dont watch in the summer- they tried theirt damdest to keep me on.  I mentioned I was dissapointed that after being a customer for many years I dont get crap for equipment. maybe tell them you think your receiver is going bad.- he then offered two DVRs and to let me keep my old receiver on for free-normally 5 a month.  I was supposed to call back and request a "NGS operator" whatever the hell that is..  Either way, I think they will offer something.

I didn't mean the service is expensive....I meant it's very expensive to build out a fiber to the home network.

The bells are going to have to have very deep pockets to build out their fiber network, and even when they get there, they will still be playing catch up to the cable companies.

Fiber is the holy grail as far as telecommunications goes...but I doubt a lot of the rural parts of the country ever sees it.

I was with Dish for 4 years, loved it, until I got a big screen digitial tv capable of HD.  I would have had to spend $500 or so out of pocket to get HD from Dish whereas my local cable company gave me a free converter box, now I'm with local cable.

There's a "digital cable" vs satelight trade off though

1) "digitial cable" isn't 100% digitial, about 1/2 of the stations are still analogue, but the rest are digital, ok...my Fox News channel isn't digital on cable for example, it was with Dish however

2) on the other hand, local cable has more HD channels than satelite does, plus my local stations are in HD whereas Dish would give you a non local ABC/NBC/CBS station for HD.

3) my local cable company will swap cable boxes for free, just call em up, ask for what model they have, if it's what you want, bring in your old and walk out with the new.  At the time I got digital cable most were using crappy Scientific Atlanta boxes, I got the latest (at the time) SciAtl 3250HD box for no extra charge

I have both in typical fashion. I have cable with HBO, and direct without HBOS's etc. I use the receiver for camping, and as a back up. Our cable is pretty good and I have a 4 meg connection. I use my computer as a DVR, works great with the wireless media center extender.

Keep calling, they will give you a deal sooner or later

If it wasn't for my cable modem, I'd consider switching to satellite.  My cable service is very reliable, but I'd like to have the digital quality.  I upgraded to digital cable for a little while, but I dropped it back to analog because it was only about 40 digital channels added to my existing 70 analog channels.  And I almost never watched anything on the digital channels because almost all of them were sports channels, music channels, kids' channels, or Spanish channels.

Hell, I only really watch about 6 channels anyway.  The rest could disappear, and I'd barely miss them.
