There was an interview on NPR about a year ago with a black American woman living in France.



She said that French people were very nice to her, until her French got good enough that she lost her American accent.



Then they assumed that she was from an African colony, and treated her rudely. If she'd deliberately affect the accent then she'd be warmly received.
