We analyze, store and dispose of benzene on occasion, even in small amounts, we try not to expose ourselves to it.
Personally, I don't think it has a sweet odor.

Many years ago, I learned to identify a handful of different carcinogens by smell

Got out of that career path very early

Best day was when a senior chemist and the lowly minion (me) were running a "shut down" pilot line behind the union's back, this one-armed steward found out and came by to shake his hook at us before filing a grievance.

USMC Camp Lejeune Water issues are all about the benzene and other chemicals that were in the water around New River Air Station from the 50's thru the 80's (or longer)

I work around hydrocarbons all day every day. Mostly NGL, since I'm the only person who knows how to use a gas chromatograph with liquid hydrocarbons...be we do a lot of gas samples as well.

We have a few gallons of pure benzene at work. We use it to find the molecular weight of condensate after we shink it and de-pentenize it

I hate to resort to pedantic nitpicking but while benzene is indeed an aromatic compound, it isn't polycyclic.

Benzo(a)pyrene is polycyclic, but not benzene.

Or add a hydroxyl group if you're feeling really brave.

I did not like the smell of any aromatics. Benzene is an aromatic. I made my living refining benzene to a spec of 99.99%. I does causes cancer in some people. We had to wear a respirator anytime the level was 1.0ppm or greater. Also made toluene and xylene also aromatics by the barge full. To this day I can't stand to be around nail polish remover.

In 1991 I met a guy that worked at the Amoco plant in Kemah, TX who *claimed* he washed his arms up to the pits daily using benzene.

I told him, "Have fun with your cancer."

He laughed.
