Is anybody hearing reports of Berreta 92 jamming problems for the Marines. I have heard several reports that the magazines they use are junk. Some company called Checkmate is making the mags.

I've read from Rob Brown's Soldier of Fortune magazine because the magazine springs are too weak to feed a full mag.

I can attest to this as fact!  I was in Iraq from March 2003 - April 2004.  I am a Military Police Officer, and I was issued a SAW, M9 Beretta and two magazines for the Beretta.  These were not used magazines, they were brand new in the wrapper.  I took the wrapper off myself.  I loaded the magazines and immediatly noticed that if I turned the magazine over, a round or two would fall out of the weapon.  I took out the springs, stretched them, and put them back in.  It seemed all right then.  Next day, taking a magazine out of it's pouch, a round fell out again.  As I took rounds out of the magazine I noticed that the weight of the bullets was too much for the spring, and the bullets were holding down the follower.  I asked around, and every single person in my company, all 120 of us, had the same problems.  Out of 240 magazines, all of them failed.  We wouldn't even consider using the pistol.  One time we had to raid a house, and I was selected as one of the entry team.  I told my buddy that it would be wierd being a point man with a SAW.  He told me that I could switch to the Beretta and then we both laughed.  I ended up using the SAW.

I never was able to fire off more than two or three shots with my Beretta the whole year.

And ordering your own and using them in theater is not allowed.

It is no joke, whoever is responsible for contracting those magazines or whoever makes them should be shot.

Edited to add: I don't blame the pistol, I blame the magazines.  I used to own a Beretta 96 (.40 caliber) and never had a problem with that one.

Somebody needs to raise some hell about this. It is getting bad when I can take my Berreta out to shot at tin cans and I have excellent mags and our Marines have to put up with junk.

I have several factory Mec Gar mags that have thousands of rounds through them, and NEVER a hitch.  <shrug>

I have several pre-ban Ramline 92F mags witha 17 rd capacity never a failure. These mags have a flat spring rather than a coil so you can squeeze in 2 more rounds in over the factory.

thebeekeeper1: I think Mec-gar is the OEM for the Baretta factory mags, Meg-gar makes mags for a bunch of gun companies.

The GUN works fine (although to flummox up a tilting-barrel pistol, you'd have to be, well, Hi-Point)...

The CONTRACT MAGS, otoh, suck...

It's like AR mags, there are good ones & bad ones... The diff is that the govt bought the bad ones...

I have several aftermarket mags for my Berreta also. My son in law and myself was out shooting one day. We ran five mags thru it no failures. I read a company called Checkmate is making these mags for the Marines they must be junk. I think I will write my senators tomorrow about this BS. Somebody needs to look into it.  The Berreta 92 is a fine handgun. Any semi-automatic handgun will jam with bad mags.

I was talking to a SEAL (yes, a real one, as the even numbered teams are here in Virignia Beach).  They had similar problems with their P226's.  They had some contract mags and the ammo would just fall out because of spring failure.

This was told to me well BEFORE OIF.

I figured problem was just some guy swapping aftermarket mags for USGI ones (as has been known to happen), but after the M9/Checkmate problems surfaced, well let's just say 2+2=4.  It would seem that the Government just went cheap and bought a bunch of junk contract hi-caps for everybody.

I dont know about you but this really pisses me off. First the contractor screws the taxpayers and our Marines have to put up with crap for mags.

Yes. Someone had posted here earlier the report from Iraq that the mag spring were no good to feed the round properly.  They loaded the mag with 10 rounds instead of 15 to make it feeds properly.

This is a DOD wide problem, not confined to the USMC.  The Army has recognized the problem officially, so hopefully better mags are in the pipeline.

Before those soldiers deploy to the Middle East, they should definitely stop by the local gunshow and pick up a few extra mags. It is sad, even thought they have to pay for it personally pay for it out their own pocket, but think about it, what's your life worth to you, probably more than the value of a couple of  $20 Beretta mags.
