[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Best Chainsaw? (Page 1 of 3)

| Looking for a new chainsaw. Tired of cheapies that are shit after a year. Usually the fingers in the pull start are made of shit metal, and won't engage the rotor and a new one is done almost immediately. Even a ryobi has an ok motor, but the pullstart teeth are crap, so you can't even start the bitch. |

Unless they have changer their policy you won't find Stihl in a big ole Lowes or Home depot. They are sold to professionals through dealers. I am sure their website will show a dealer near you. |

I'd only consider Husky - Owned Sthil and they're a good saw but IMO not as good as a Husky. Granted you can't go wrong (too much) with either one but guys I know that are serious loggers - Husky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx6JVictAKI Don't know how to embed but there she be - dude's in AK cutting for serious coin - Husky. Guys I know cutting pulp wood in MI - Husky. |
|
Jonsered, most def. Had one that came with a 16" bar and the guy "over-barred" it to 20". Went through anything like a hot knife through soft butter. Sold it and know it's still going strong over 10+ years later.
Up here in the 'Hood in the Northern Wood of NYS, it's what what many of the 'jacks use. My fiance's Dad was a 'jack and she grew up here - she votes Jonsered. And she can handle one too. |

I have several Sthil, but prefer the Echos. They don't make them anymore do they? We still have 2 big old ones with 24" bars for the biggest cottonwoods. Quoted:

We cut a lot of walnut in the winter and cottonwood in the summer, and we use Stihl, Husqvarna, Jonsered and Echo. |

The pro stihl are ms200/t, 261, 362,441, 461, 660, 661, and 880. Note the above only applies to current pro saw model numbers designations. |

You need to consider what you are going to use the chainsaw for. A big, heavy chainsaw you could use to start a pulp wood business would be a pain in the ass if you needed to cut limbs and smaller trees around your place. I fit this category perfectly and have had a 7 1/2 pound Echo CS305 for over 10 years and love it. It's light weight makes it a pleasure to use (and safer).
It also does the one thing that is my most important criteria for a chainsaw. It cranks. It has never failed to crank after 2 or 3 pulls for 10 years, even after setting 7 or 8 months. There is nothing worse or more miserable than a saw that won't crank back up and you end up pulling you guts out trying to crank it. That being said about the Echo, they don't make a model this light anymore, and the small Stihl is about the same weight as the current small Echo, now and cheaper with a 16" bar instead of a 14". I would at least try the Stihl if my Echo dies. |
