So, I discovered this RTN (Retro Television Network) channel on my cable box and have been watching re-runs of my favorite cop shows, Adam-12 and Dragnet (Emergency too for the FD side of the coin). Brought back many memories of being a kid and watching it on TV.  Adam-12 was the series that made me want to become an LEO.  Despite the campiness of the acting it still is a great show. I was surprised to see how the characters changed cars and equipment over the seasons.  First couple seasons they carried 6 inch S&W Model-14's and then they went to 4 inch Model 15's.  On Dragnet, Jack Webb carries what I think is a Colt 2 inch.

Dragnet from the 1950's if you want to watch some pre-miranda police work.

I think "Crime Story" and "Law & Order CI" with Goren are my favorites.

COPS by far.

You will notice cops have a clue about guns or gun laws.  99.999999% of the ones filmed do not support your rights to own guns or otherwise.

On the flip side you will notice that no matter how long they put this stuff on TV, criminals are not getting smarter, if anything they are dumber than in the past and in the past they were idiots.  It makes me sad to see someone so stupid still breathing up all the good air.  I mean at some point you gotta start thinking that telling the cops the drugs/money/weapon in your pockets do not belong to you and you have no idea how they got there is a shitty idea.

Hill Street Blues was the most innovative.  It lead the way for NYPD Blue and all the modern police dramas in my opinion.

For the really old timers here, how about Broderick Crawford in "Highway Patrol".

My favorite cop scene though was from the 70's show "Cannon"
Frank Cannon stands in the middle of a runway as a P-51 rolls out on takeoff, with quad 50 cals blazing at Cannon.
As it takes to the air over Cannon' s head, he wheels around and fires a SINGLE shot from his snubnose 38.
The bullet hits the pilot, plane crashes, end of story.

Of course as I got older, I question the validity of how old fat bastard Frank Cannon could hit a moving target going
200 mph at close range.  How a .38 could plow thru the entire airplane from the bottom, killing the pilot.
And finally, how anyone could completely miss a target the size of Frank Cannon.  The guy was a small planet!!!!

Homicide, life on the streets
Show was based on a REALLY good book by a crime reporter from the baltimore sun i think.
He rode along w/ detectives for 6+ months iirc. great firsthand crime reporting in that book and they were pretty faithful to it in the series.

SHIELD! Not realistic I hope, but you had to admire someone who was true to his heart and beliefs.

How many swear they would live to Vic Mackie's code?
