I am looking for a tomahawk to use on the farm with a hammer head and good steel.

What is the best value in them these days?

I don't want the vietnam style hawk, more like the Coldsteel Rifleman Hawk....

Thoughts?

How about a "tactical tomahawk"? With a nuclear warhead

Well, the problem with it, is when it drives fence steeples, well, it sort of vaporizes them.

I would say the rifleman hawk or the trailhawk by CS would work for you! They are cheap and you wont worry about beating the shit out of them.

No offense intended my friend, in the OP i stated that I needed one with a hammer head, not a point like the vietnam hawk.... I need something that will chop as well as drive fence steeples or nails.

I am leaning towards the Coldsteel Rifleman Hawk but didn't know if there was a better value (I don't mind spending more if it is better)

Either Ft. Turner Forge or HB Forge. For the added money they are much better than the cast or drop forged models that are mass produced.

Ft. Turner

HB Forge

I have ths CS trailhawk.  Actually I have three of them somewhere.  THey are alright for the money.  IF your willing to spend a little time messing with them they work better.  I shaped the hafts to better fit the heads, sanded and stained them.  Then I spendt a little time convexing the edges and getting them nice and sharp.  The stell is a little soft IMO abd the cutting edge is not hard to damage.  But for $20 its hard to complain.  THey are useful tools and I will probably buy a couple more, as well as the riflemans hawk in the future.

That would be a pretty good choice, IMO.  I have a CS Trail Hawk and while it would make a pretty good weapon, the cutting edge is too short for use as a tool.

Too good for a hatchet from the hardware store?

Around here we call that a hatchet.

Tacticool uses include,

 splitting wood for fireplace

trimming low branchs in trees in the yard

 cleaning mower deck with

other assorted uses as you mentioned as far as the fence post staples.

You can also find them in the camping section of lots of places as well.

I wouldn't trade more than twenty wampum beads or two rabbit pelts for one.

Home  Depot sells one exactly like you want with an orange fiberglass handle.  IIRC $22. It's not called a Tomahawk though.

New hatchets are pretty much made with shit steel from china (estwing is still pretty decent tools though) unless you want to spend bigger bucks and get one from europe.

Best bet for hatchets now is to shop garage sales and such for someone selling "dads or grandpas old hatchet" which will be a better quality piece, often a plumb or of german origin

A bit small for my tastes.

A Vaughn Rig axe is the ticket.

If you need one like the Cold Steel units, they are hard to beat. CS does indeed make some pretty good stuff.
