There's some interesting things here. First is the report came out yesterday, as did this article, but no recommendations were reported on by the Business Insider. Normally, one would expect Pentagon recommendations to spend money on, but none are mentioned.

Second are these quotes:
"Many of these exercises focused on combat realism and featured night missions, training in adverse weather conditions, and simultaneous multi-domain operations," the Pentagon said in its report. Combat realism in training has been a focus of Chinese leader Xi Jinping's military modernization efforts, which are aimed at building a world-class force that can fight and win wars.

And Chinese leadership has never renounced the use of force as an option for achieving its unification goals with Taiwan, which China regards as part of its sovereign territory.
These statement of facts are then juxtaposed to these quotes:
In specifically assessing potential military action that China could take against Taiwan, the Pentagon concluded that a massive amphibious invasion would be a tough feat for Beijing. Such an operation, which is among the more complicated to carry out, would require significant support, air and sea control, and enough supplies. Such an undertaking would significantly strain PLA forces, and there are substantial risks.
and
The Department of Defense noted, however, that while China may struggle with a full-scale invasion of Taiwan, it is capable of seizing smaller Taiwan-controlled islands, such as Pratas or Itu Aba in the South China Sea. The Pentagon also said that an "invasion of a medium-sized, better-defended island such as Matsu or Kinmen is within the PLA's capabilities."

Such a move would demonstrate capability and resolve while showing restraint, the Pentagon said, but there are still political risks, such as strong international condemnation.
We got some back tracking going on here it seems. No more talk about the US Navy estimate of 2026? (Correct me, please, Carmel)
I love that part in Blue. No one is complaining about the PRC starving their citizens right now, but some how the "We Are the World" will muster the courage to condemn PRC aggression over an island no one can find on a map. Sure, pal.

Last quote:
Earlier this month, Vice President Kamala Harris made a rare trip to a South China Sea hotspot, specifically the Philippine island of Palawan, which overlooks contested areas in the strategic waterway. China's response was more restrained though than it was when Pelosi visited Taiwan.
We have footage of her rare trip:

As was alluded to earlier in this thread, the Biden Admin is going to have a way out of engaging in the South Pacific using the same social dividing techniques leftists use in the US:

US cancels trip by LGBTQ envoy to Indonesia after objection

It's a short article; no real meaty quotes to share. But, the important thing to note is that the Biden Admin pulled the same shit in Afghanistan before it all fell apart in 2021. They don't pull this shit with the Chinese or the Iranians, though.

Thanks for sharing the videos, Alacran!!

I was particularly struck on how there were no interviews of American officials or audio/video clips of American officials  saying one thing or another or saying anything at all. Yet, all were freely criticizing the US for not giving them money. These same people used "measured" words when discussing the PRC, though. I assume they didn't want to be seen as being offensive to the PRC.

I was also very struck in the fact that throughout the region's recorded History, the main group of "Chinese" who migrated and populated the islands were identified as coming from Taiwan. Taiwan is the new name for Formosa. The island was also identified as the progenitors of the original aboriginal peoples long ago that populated the islands 5,000 years ago. The videos' narrator conflated Taiwan with the PRC in ways that I figured was "appeasement" to the One China policy again, so to be seen as not giving offense. To wit, Formosans are not the Chinese. Even the Chinese are multiple ethnic and linguistic groups.

Today we have an article from The Atlantic (oddly enough is readable) about...well, it really never took a stand as compared to the article's title. It covers a number of topics, but never too deep. Still, there's a few things to be learned here.

China's War Against Taiwan Has Already Started

Here's how it starts off with a fake story about how the PRC picked up stranded Citizens in the path of a typhoon while Taiwan did nothing to help their Citizens:
The story rapidly migrated into the mainstream Taiwanese media. Journalists attacked the government: Why had Chinese diplomats moved so quickly and effectively? Why were the Taiwanese so incompetent? News organizations in Taiwan described the incident as a national embarrassment, especially for a country whose leaders proclaim they have no need for support from China. Headlines declared, "To Get on the Bus, One Has to Pretend to Be Chinese," and "Taiwanese Follow China Bus." At its peak, the angry coverage and social-media attacks became so overwhelming that a Taiwanese diplomat, apparently unable to bear the deluge of commentary and the shame of failure, died by suicide.

Subsequent investigations turned up some strange facts. Many of the people who had been posting so prominently and with such enthusiasm about the incident were not real; their photographs were composite images. The obscure website that first promoted the story turned out to be affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party. The videos were fake. Strangest of all, the Japanese government confirmed that there had been no Chinese buses, and thus no special Taiwanese failure at all. But this semblance of failure had been pounced upon by journalists and news anchors, especially by those who wanted to use it to attack the ruling party. This, clearly, was what Chinese propagandists had intended. The anonymity of social media, the proliferation of "news" sites with unclear origins, and, above all, the hyper-partisan nature of Taiwanese politics had been manipulated in order to push one of the Chinese regime's favorite narratives: Taiwanese democracy is weak. Chinese autocracy is strong. In an emergency, Taiwanese people want to be Chinese.
View Quote

The Article morphs from there, but let's discuss.
We should see more agitation and propagandizing in Taiwan before an invasion. We should also see internal political division and the societal discord as well as an increase in street crime, more street demonstrations over political issues/controversies, but most importantly criminal acts of sabotage on infrastructure, such as power stations, hospital generators, food and water storage facilities, water treatment plants, etc.

But, the article doesn't go through any of that. Instead, the article tries to make a case that Taiwan is the Ukraine of the Pacific. 'Nuff said about journalistic stupidity.

But, the article does go back to being interesting when it describes the Taiwanese response, both public and private, to counter PRC agit-prop operations.

Doublethink isn't the only team identifying and analyzing propaganda campaigns against Taiwan: Another monitoring organization, the Information Operations Research Group also made up, once again, of young people with a background in online activism has put together a report on the Chinese media and Chinese influencers who sought to sway conversation on the island during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, the Chinese first pushed the idea that the U.S. was preventing Taiwan from getting vaccines, then that the Taiwanese were falling behind the rest of the world in vaccines, then that Taiwanese residents were surreptitiously getting their vaccines from China. These narratives now look quite thin and unconvincing in light of the disastrous Chinese lockdowns of 2022, but some of them had traction in Taiwan at the time.

Rather than merely passing their analyses of Chinese tactics to the government, both organizations also work on countering them. Doublethink produces videos that seek to help viewers understand where the information they are reading is coming from so that in future they can do the detective work themselves. IORG runs workshops more than 180 so far to help Taiwanese middle- and high-school teachers create programs on disinformation in their classrooms. One of IORG's co-directors, Chihhao Yu, told me that the point is not just to help students find tidbits of false information but to teach them to understand broader narratives: how pro-Chinese media and social media string together information which can be either true or false to make people doubt whether their country has allies, whether it has the ability to stay separate from China, whether it has a future at all. Yu himself has no doubts about Taiwan's future. His website describes him like this: "Taiwanese. Hacking things. Build a new nation."
View Quote

That was the "private" response from Taiwanese citizens. One kind of governmental response is led by this person:

Audrey Tang, Taiwan's first digital minister, doesn't just promote the world of digital activism; she helped create it. A child prodigy who was programming in Silicon Valley at the age of 19, she participated in the Sunflower Revolution of 2014 a youth movement organized around opposition to a trade deal with China and describes herself both as a "conservative anarchist" as well as "post-gender." (She has said she is unbothered by which pronouns anyone uses.) On the day she and I met, Tang was wearing a T-shirt bearing the Ukrainian trident, and she told me she has been in touch with Ukraine's own innovative digital ministry. She reminded me that her commitment to openness is absolute: Every interview she gives, including the one I did with her, eventually appears online.

Before you all lose your eye sight, here's some highlights for those that don't read.
How to counter this fear? The answer can't just be to berate the fearful, or to accuse them of cowardice. Fear is a physical sensation, and it is best countered with physical activity, or at least some form of action. In Taipei, I saw what that might look like: three dozen office workers sitting on the floor of a conference room on a rainy, weekday afternoon, learning how to stop heavy bleeding.
View Quote
The emergency-response trainers, the silicone limbs, and the bandages were all donated by the Forward Alliance, another civic organization. Its founder, Enoch Wu, has thought a lot about the psychology of resistance, and in particular about the need for civil defense. The Forward Alliance provides training in emergency medicine and evacuation procedures, mostly at churches and schools, all over the island, several days a week. Part of the purpose is pragmatic: If a typhoon, an earthquake, or military attack really were to occur, the island would immediately require people who know about evacuation and emergency medicine.
View Quote
But the point of these exercises isn't just to teach people how to shoot a gun or bandage a wound. They are also meant to nurture feelings of community and connection, giving people confidence in advance that, in an emergency, they can count on their fellow citizens. These kinds of preparatory experiences have an especially important impact in Taiwan, a nation whose politics are deeply polarized, with members of the blue and green camps suspecting one another of irresponsibility or unreason, not unlike the red-blue competition in the United States.

‘Destruction’: Russia’s terrifying threat to Australia

“We are increasing production of the most powerful means of destruction, including those based on new principles,” former president Dmitry Medvedev said yesterday.

“Our enemy dug in not only in the Kyiv province of our native Malorossiya, it is in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand – and a whole number of other places that pledged allegiance to the Nazis.”

Malorossiya is a mythical reference to Ukraine, meaning “Little Russia”.

Medvedev, 57, was a puppet president between 2008 and 2012 after Vladimir Putin was constitutionally barred from serving a third consecutive term as president

He is now deputy head of the Security Council in the Kremlin.

Politico just published an article where some US politicians are saying the Biden Admin is making promises it can't keep regarding Taiwan, the Rep of Philippines, and the rest of the South Pacific.

Why the U.S. isn't ready for a fight in the Indo-Pacific

Many of suggested that the potential conflict would be primarily fought using air power. Others say it will be naval based. Real life says it'll be both.

The PLA Navy has 343 ships there, plus a couple of civilian fleets they can "press" into National Service. The US Navy has 292 ships around the World. The US would have to have the Japanese and the ROK navies heavily involved to match the PLA Navy. Let's get to the quotes:

This is the first line of the article:
The U.S. has pledged to deploy so much firepower to the Indo-Pacific in 2023 that China won't even consider invading Taiwan. Lawmakers and allies say it's already too late.
View Quote

The Pentagon has spent billions since 2021 on Asia-focused initiatives, including base maintenance and relocating some U.S. forces within the region, to maintain a "competitive advantage" over China's military. And the U.S. military presence in the region will become "more lethal, more mobile and more resilient" in the coming 12 months, Ratner said, hinting that new partnerships are in the works. He said details on what that will mean in practice will come in early 2023.

But critics argue the U.S. may be so far behind as to make that goal impossible. The Pentagon is planning to temporarily cut its number of naval ships and is reducing its aircraft in the region as it prepares to replace them with more modern versions. And U.S. shipbuilding constraints could make it difficult to deliver on a plan to help Australia build nuclear submarines   part of a joint strategy to deter China.
View Quote

As for Taiwan, while the Biden administration has increased the tempo of arms sales approvals for the self-governing island, some $19 billion of those weapons   including Harpoon anti-ship missiles and Stinger surface-to-air missiles   are yet to be delivered because of the supply chain issues.
View Quote

This next part is a big problem for the US. How many times has the US "cut and run" from those it has called an ally? March, 1975, the Dems in Congress halted all funding for the South Vietnamese Gov't. The North took over by the end of the next month. Afghanistan, we have the same story in 2021.  These things do not go unnoticed.

"To have a seamless reinforcing defense relationship   the infrastructure must be in place like naval bases, air bases, depots, radars. We don't have these things in the Philippines," said Delfin Lorenzana, former Philippine defense secretary. That means the U.S. "cannot sustain a long supply chain from Guam and Japan/Korea to project its power in the South China Sea," he wrote in an email.

And most other Southeast Asian countries are likely to be reluctant to provide military or logistical support in the event of conflict with China due to fears of blowback from Beijing.

Regional governments like Indonesia and Malaysia "are certain that China will retaliate against them should they be seen as siding with the United States," said Drew Thompson, former director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
View Quote

In the end, I think this article calls it correctly (which would be a first for a Politico article IMO,)
But in the short term, Beijing's interpretation of these limitations to U.S. force posture in the Indo-Pacific could encourage it to act.

There's a growing danger that "the Chinese have a misperception of our own weakness   that they think we're weaker than we are and launch an invasion based on misperceptions," said Gray, the former NSC chief of staff.

South Korea apparently balking at being a save Taiwan hub and Japan better acquire amazing air defense as China will saturate every US Navy, Marine and Air base there. How do you get your voting population to go, "yeah, cool idea"?

It's even worse with the Nazis. What was there to stop Stalin from suing for Peace? Lebensraum was only about the historical German colonies in the East. That's what the Nazis originally wanted: the return of the lands for a pan-Germanic Nation. The Third Reich was an attempt of a return of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. German tribes sacked Rome circa 451, then came the Dark Ages. Charlemagne was made Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. circa 801. The German question of a small Germany or a large Germany was the entire 19th Century. Then came Hitler, and the answer to the question was a really big Germany.

I understand where the sentiments come from. Let me suggest that it's better to figure how countries got in those positions in the first place where all choices are shitty.

True which is why I found the immediate rush to Japan by Sec Def and State Dept the year Biden stepped into the White House amusing. It was obvious why. But I’ll give South Korea President has more balls than everyone else fir telling China to stick it where the sun don’t shine over THAAD and saying he will strike North Korea back regardless of threats from their nukes.

South Korea apparently balking at being a save Taiwan hub and Japan better acquire amazing air defense as China will saturate every US Navy, Marine and Air base there. Japan needs 5 years IF it follows thru on big arms buying announced this year. That's 2023-2028 what if China attacks before 2028? What if the Japanese public votes out the current unpopular government that proposed the arms buying spree?
If you were South Korean, you'd be balking too. If you were Japanese, this is just another day in a millennial  long struggle. And now you're most important ally is run by a corrupt party that's engaged in protecting its money laundering system. Those two countries wondering what the hell is going on and wondering who can they rely on. Neither are strong enough to take on China militarily, politically, economically. What do you do????

I think most are looking at china as not someone you conquer but a country you choke off and let them implode.  In that scenario Japan has a competent Navy, combined with US naval forces should be able to choke china off from food and energy in short order.  Can China lob missiles at bases sure and some will get through.  But I can't see any scenario where foreign troops step foot on chinese soil.

S. Korea has no navy to speak of and will have to deal with N. Korea.  They're hosed.

I’m sure Pakistan, Burma and Russia are pitching to China this very reasoning as to why China should return the love. China expanding Gwadar and adding more bases in Burma this month along with Russia boasting about record wheat and a new bridge and gas pipeline which Putin attended in person to cut the ribbon are something China will reflect on.

This next part is a big problem for the US. How many times has the US "cut and run" from those it has called an ally? March, 1975, the Dems in Congress halted all funding for the South Vietnamese Gov't. The North took over by the end of the next month. almost 200 of those "ships" are corvettes or smaller missile boats...Think big PT boats.   They have an antiquated destroyer force based on various designs from places like France and no cruisers except for the Type 055s which could easily be classed a cruiser by tonnage and weapons.  Type 055s are one of the better surface combatants floating right now, at least on paper, and they have 4 or 5 of them.

They have one clapped out Russian carrier that used to be an amusement park...a copy of that carrier with some improvements and one full deck conventional carrier on the ways.   They maybe have enough surface combatants with the systems and range to put together a couple carrier strike groups approaching the type that the US has 4 of at sea right now.

Plus we have spent 50 years learning how to use them.

Trying to copy the US navy structure and tactics is a dumb move, at least this decade.

Then we can agree that the PLA Navy doesn't have a "Seven Seas" Strategy.

Can the PRC cause a halt to maritime traffic that part of the Pacific and into the Indian Ocean? It seems that's the strategy they're working on. It also seems that they're developing/constructing more than enough sea craft to do accomplish that strategy. How many theaters would the US Navy have to abandon (assuming our beloved allies have a dental appointment that day) to get enough subs and surface ships there to effectively open up navigation once again?

Tough questions and we don't have good answers for them. Hoping the PRC can only muster a  half-assed attempt at a military operation that falls-on-its-face-all-by-itself is not a very good counter-strategy. I'm sure many of us are/have been in career fields where there were a number of people who'd rather be lucky than good. Not a good place to be.

I liked this statement best:
However, it has since determined that China's rise as a regional and global power demands attention as part of the US' Indo-Pacific strategy to counter Beijing, particularly in the Solomon Islands, which were a key battleground in the Pacific theater during World War II, and where pro-US sentiment has been high.
There are no quotation marks, so it's not a quote from the State Dept. It's a paraphrase. I wonder what the actual statement was??????

Yes, the old standard of the Navy losing two carriers. That's been going on since the '80s. Apparently, they haven't found a fix for that problem yet.

Pentagon’s said China long range anti ship missiles are a concern but China is also studying putting hypersonic missiles on their ships and it sounds like China wants to take out aircraft and ships on the ground and in ports before they get going. The lack of Pacific nations willing to host US military stuff so the USAF and USN can disperse is another reason I think the Solomon island thread is relevant

I have no idea if they've war-gamed blockades. It's interesting as to who's initiating the blockade. Right now, as the pieces are set up, if China were to start a blockade, they cold cut off passage from the Indian Ocean/Western Australia. to the North of Australia with all those Islands that the Chinese are successfully negotiating with, heading North the Western side of the Philippines, and be to the East of Taiwan. That's leave an Easterly approach to Australia through more and more ice fields as the Southern oceans are getting colder. That's a big lake!

I don't think the US has done more than a one ship "freedom of the seas" sail through the area.

Oddly enough and American and her Allies blockade would look really similar. I'm not certain how many naval vessels both the Philippines and Viet Nam have together, but they would probably be blockaded by the massive civil fleet the Chinese have put together. No idea if they could or would sail against any type of Chinese fleet.
