I saw a head pop up from a hole below the mailbox and found a Black-capped Chickadee nest.  This is a stock photo of an adult from Wiki:

Here are my photos:

That is great!
I am an amateur bird watcher and I love to see that you appreciate what you found.
Try to protect them from cats. That looks to be easy access to them.
Hopefully they will fledge and fly away unharmed.

That's got to be one of the most fortified nests around, very cool!

Have you had much rain up there this year?

Yes, it's a monster!  I have some other ones that have inexplicably died back quite a bit.  I'm suspecting voles.

I took the pictures a couple of weeks ago and they've since flown away.  It's one of the few birds around here in the winter and it's neat to have them around.  I really like their song.

It's been a good spring.  We've had a good amount of rain but with very sunny days in between.  This is perfect weather for me because everything has greened up nicely.

I was just wondering, because that nest looks like it could fill up with a good rain.   Eh, what do I know, I never built a nest. Maybe the mailbox makes for a good roof

The mailbox does a pretty good job protecting it.  The top of the wood would stay pretty dry when it rained.

Pretty cool!  I see lots of chickadees on our property but I have never seen one of their nests.
