I have seen this done on the metal types but on my Toyota they are plastic.
Should I just sand down below the "chrome then primer them and paint with a somewhat decent black paint?

Or should I just paint them and see?

I have zero experience painting plastics aside from using a rattle can on an Ar and the results were exactly what you would expect.

thanks in advance.

sand entire surface with 400, you don't need to sand all the chrome off. that would take a long time then use kylon fusion and do a few light coats. reattach with foam doublestick tape (3m or otherwise)

edit: the important part is to make sure you scuff (have little scratches) on the entire surface, otherwise the paint will flake off the non-scuffed chrome in no-time.

Agree.

Krylon Fusion is great stuff for plastic.  I painted the rocker panels on my daily driver with the stuff two years ago, hasn't chipped, faded, or otherwise begun to fail anywhere.

Don't do it. It's just a fad, unless your Amish, they have been doing it to their vehicles for years.

thanks, like i said before I have done metal but never plastic.

So what if it is a fad, It keeps the wife happy and it is all she wants for xmas.  Few hours of work getting the damn things off.   Sounds like a win win to me.

This exactly. I orig debadged the truck, the dug up emblems, blacked out the ones I wanted to put back on. My truck is black, I also picked up blacked LED tails and 3rd as well. A good scuff and clean will be good to go. I sanded, cleaned, primer/adhesion promoter, paint. They look great. Some have tossed the in the oven and baked, 6 to 1, half dozen to another.

You can also use a tinted clearcoat over the chrome for a "black-chrome" look.  If you want it to last forever, use a automotive quality paint with UV inhibitors.
