Quoted: My casual research has dead-ended. Does anybody what if any kind of training, licensure, et c. is required for the purchase of blasting caps & explosives? All the info at the BATF website. You'll need a storage area that they approve. Your state may have additional regulations. Unless you're starting a new career, it will be time-consuming/pricey. Whatchyou up to? We won't tell anyone.[:D] |
| In NC about 8 yrs ago, you had to have a Drivers License and $100 to get a case of the higher grade dynamite (can't remember what it was called but there were 2 grades) and enough blasting caps for the lot. They carried it at the Hardware Store, but you did have to sign for it. Same as buying a long gun as I recall. That and some post hole diggers, diesel and fertilizer and you were ready for stumps.....we cleared fields like that on the farm..... |

I bought 100 blasting caps and #50 of detagel from Appalachian Explosives in Tracy City Tennessee in 1990 and all they did was a call to the county sherrifs dept. I don't know how it is now. I wish I could help you but all I can do is share my experience in purchasing explosives with you. BTW you can build squibs at home with ease that will set off progressivly larger charges. |

http://www.ime.org/ Check the above site out. Most blasters belong to this organization in our area. In VA, the Commonwealth requires a state license/certification and proper insurance coverage. A permit is required to use, store and transport the big stuff. Up to about 10 years ago, if you owned a farm, you could go to the local hardware store and by the stuff to take out stumps. No permit required on agricultural zoned land back then. Local fire marshals can also require permits and safety inspections if they enforce the State Fire Code. Lots of regulations now in place since OK City bombing :( Most of the regs are adopted from the BATF and NFPA 495... DOT regs deal with the transport regs. All light reading of course[flame] |
