It not only plays them, it upconverts them to a higher resolution as well! Yea except most low end Blu-Ray players do not do that very well, not as well as many $50ish upconverting DVD players. ARe there any good ones in the $200 range? Several great players in that range....and the PS3 slim for $299 as well. |

The PS3 is a great Bluray player but is a bit noisy. Go to CNET.com and read up on the Bluray players. Samsung has several that are very well reviewed, so are several Panasonics. By "noise" do you mean video or actual audio noise? Some of the fat systems have cooling fans that are a bit loud when they kick in, not sure if the slims do it or not. Not to noticeable unless your sitting close to the ps3 or have the audio very low. |

But otherwise, the PS3 is a good quality Blu-Ray? I figure I could get a two-fer; a nice gaming unit AND a Blu-Ray Yep good BD player plus you get games, if your a netflix user it will also stream their online movies. Dell has the 120 gig slim for $270 right now. Don't forget to pick up a copy of MW2 while your at it |

Just remember-
PS3's send high-def audio via PCM ONLY....so make sure it is set to that instead of bitrate. Its all under the audio options in the menu of your PS3, easy to do. In short...that little light on your receiver that generally lights up to tell you its receiving dolby digital or DTS....well, not gonna happen with the PS3. You can still get high def sound, just don't drive yourself nuts trying to figure out why your receiver isn't lighting up to tell you whats going on, because when you send audio PCM, that means that your PS3 is doing the audio decoding, not your receiver. Thus...no light to indicate any decoding. |

I wonder if sony firmware updates that I've had to do recently changed this. I've had to do two since the new slimline came out............But then again I'd assume if they could have updated it, they would have...possibly a "hardware" issue within the PS3 that prevents an update? Who knows......lol |
