Thanks in advance

Yes

Walmart

Make sure it has an "Up converter"....will play regular DVD's to an almost Blu-ray quality.

I got a sony new for about $120 a year ago.

It is well worth it as it reads many of my scrached DVDs that a normal player wouldn't read. It is also amazing when you play a bluray disk. The operating system is much more user freindly than DVD

DO IT

Bluray players are only worth the money if you actually have a decent plasma/LCD TV to watch it on. Otherwise you won't notice much of a difference, if any at all.

worth it. The BluRay DVDs are about the same price as regular DVDs. I bought a samsung with 5.1 surround. Well worth it. Although mine is having some issues reading newer Blurays and I updated the firmwear and everything.

ETA: I just bought Boondock Saints at wallyworld for $10 on Bluray and Talladaga Nights for $13.

PS3 is a great blu ray player and does an incredible job on the upconversion of DVDs. I've got both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 and the PS3 media output wins hands down.

BD live is not worth the price differential IMHO.

You should be able to pick up a decent samsung or sony unit for $129 or $299 for the PS3 with web, netflix and gaming capability.

Now that 1080p 42" tvs are under $600 you should be able to set up a system for under a grand with speakers.

I have an LG and love it.  Paid $300, built in wireless, can stream netflix etc..  I thought about the PS3, but wanted to stay away from gaming consoles.  I wasted too much time playing games, sold my xbox 360 2 years ago so I wouldn't waste 5 hours a night playing CoD online.

Walmart probably has good prices. Got mine at Best Buy.  They had some for $150-200 but I opted for the one with the extra features.

Best Buy has what I believe is a re badged LG player that will stream Neflix as well, it retails for $150 but they have had it on sale off an on for $100. It gets pretty good reviews for something in that price range.

A nice samsung at walmart for about $140, has support for netflix, pandora, youtube, and blockbuster I think the model number is 1590.  This is the one I have but I bought it 6 months ago for a hundred bucks more.  It loads fast and is easy to use.

I purchased a Samsung recently with built-in wireless streaming of Netflix, Blockbuster, Pandora and YouTube.  Those are nice features but I wanted one that had built-in HD sound decoding with 7.1 analog outputs so I could connect it to my A/V receiver's analog inputs.

Cheap is good but make sure it has all of the features that you want.

He is in fact very right.

If your screen is not big enough at the distance you sit and/or your oversight is even slightly defective you will not see the difference.

Whatever you do, get one with NetFlix (and built-in wireless if you can't get a cable to your box.) With your netflix plan you can choose from 100s of movies. You'll use the Netflix player 10x as much as you use it for BluRays. They even have movies in HD over netflix.

Sweet man - I had no idea I was soooo far behind on the technology.  MY TV just went up, so now I can get a LCD and a Blue Ray.

What you all don't know isn't worth knowing!

the PS3 reads way faster than the Sony player my folks have.  Plus you get internet, netflix, the ability to save hundreds of photos/videos/songs. Firmware updates are fast, and it can go wireless. PS3 is awesome
oh yeah

and you can play video games on it as well

It is a real good deal especially if you get it at $100. Best Buy has been putting that one and its wireless big brother on sale a couple times a month.

How do you find it for $100? The one at the link is on sale for $150.

Worth it if you have a good TV and more importantly surround sound system.  If not, I'd start there.

I bought an LG a few months ago and have already had to replace it.  I replaced it with a Samsung which I really like.

I picked up a Magnavox at Walmart for $90 a few months back. I am pretty happy with it. When I bought Inglorious Basterds I had to update the firmware, other than that it has done pretty well.

I don't want to spring for a big TV, so I'm buying a 23" HD 1080p monitor ($200-250) and a blu-ray player (Sony or Panasonic).

Some blu-ray screencaps.  They're compressed, of course, and you're probably not viewing them on a 1920x1080 screen, but you get the idea:

That sucks - no warranty or what?  Do they all cook that fast?
