| I just bought my kids a PS3 , My question is it claims to up convert movies to 1080p , if that is the case is there any advantage on purchasing Blue-ray movies ? Will the quality of a Blue-ray movie be worth the difference ? |

Easy way to find out. Rent a DVD and Bluray of the same movie and compare a few scenes. Costs you a couple bucks and tells you a lot.
But, yes, there is a significant difference. Upconversion can make a standard DVD look okay on bluray, but it can't add details that aren't in the DVD, it merely smooths out the missing parts based on the information it does have. |

PS3 is a great blu ray player. Too bad it isn't so great as a game system. I have PS3 and 360 and i don't buy games for the sony unless they are ps3 only. Most of the time the games are 1080p on 360 and only 720p on ps3. Fallout 3 for instance. Looks awesome on 360, not so much on ps3.
And blu ray is going to look much better than any upconverted DVD. If you've got the TV for it anyway. |

The PS3 upscales like a champ, but it is simply impossible for a 480i definition DVD to equal a 1080 definition Blu Ray disc. |

Correct you are. i=interlaced and p=progressive Standard Definition (regular TV broadcast) = 480i Standard DVD = 480p HD Blu-ray = 1080p When a DVD is "upscaled", a processor takes the original 480 scan lines and interpolates or "blends" more lines into it. It looks better but is a much softer picture then an HD 1080p configuration. No contest even to the untrained eye. HD Blu-ray wins!! Next up are TV sets with dual channel HDMI inputs capable of Ultra HD now being tested in Japan. |
