Anything from the Oh Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Oh and a pretty funny movie too. Especially this one for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbgfQ48hWuY |
| I saw these guys at a local festival last year and they gave me a cd for free. I've been listening to it since. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d55xNwedmAA |

If you want some Bluegrass with a little bit of an edge check out The .357 String Band. They broke up a few years back but they were amazing

There it is. I was going to post the same thing Imagine old school Metallica, than put it to bluegrass with a mother fucking banjo. It is sublime, and Hero of the Day is damned near perfection. I HATE country, but for some reason I LOVE bluegrass. I think it is the technical skill of the banjo, God damned 8-stringed demon. |

Now that is an accurate description. When the south decides to rise again, this is what I'll be listening to on the way down to assist. ![]() |

I've had that bug for 50 years now.
XM and Sirius have a Bluegrass channel (I have XM but i think the same broadcast is on Sirius). There are a number of free online "stations" - just google "Bluegrass music online" and listen awhile. If you want to buy CDs, check out http://countysales.com - probably the most extensive list online - look thru their "traditional bluegrass" catalog for names/bands to search for samples online. Some recent great instrumental players: Jim Mills - hot Banjo tunes - try out "Hide Head Blues" wow! Jerry Douglas - probably the best Dobro player -plays regularly with Allison Krauss and on lots of other projects Ferrell Stowe comes to mind - he has some cool Dobro tunes - not very well known Michael Cleveland - makes a fiddle get up and walk - hear him in the band "Flamekeeper" Dan Crary - although i havent heard his stuff lately, his guitar work is wonderful To get a sense of the history and evolution, listen to and read about Bill Monroe (of course!), Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Don Reno, Doc Watson, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves ....many more. There's a lot of great stuff out there - old and new. XM plays a lot of it but doesn't seem to play up much of the more modern stuff except for the biggest names. |

Old and In the Way is pretty much as good as it gets for me as far as traditional bluegrass.....but can't go wrong with Del Mccoury, Bill Monroe, Garcia and Grisman, etc....
But I also love alot of non-traditional bluegrass bands such as Yonder Mountain String Band, Allison Kraus and Union Station, Leftover Salmon (older stuff mostly), Old Crow Medicine Show, and Bela Fleck to name a few..... |
