Dueling banjos is a must from THAT pair. Honorable mention to Owens and Clark on that one too. |

If you can find it, get the Album: "Will the Circle be Unbroken" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Also anything by Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and the Osbourne Brothers. Great Blue Grass Tunes: Rocky Top, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Theme Song to Beverly Hill Billys, Orange Blossom Special, and Dueling Banjos. Speaking of which, get the soundtrack to the Movie: Deliverance. |
Don't forget "Will the Circle be Unbroken, Volume 2. Tribute to Mother Maybelle" |

If you want a real treat, see if you can find "Old and In The Way" with Jerry Garcia (yeah, that Jerry Garcia from Grateful Dead), Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and David Grisman. Ol' Jerry could really pluck a banjo, and the others are bluegrass legends. Appalachian Stomp: Bluegrass Classics and More Bluegrass Classics are a couple of good compilations that I like to listen to every now and then. |
Mentioned it because i know the organizer for Washington groups that play Blue grass, they meet in Maltby community center once a month, it's free and if you come early {18;00} free potluck dinner, there are many events on many floors, doubt i'll go as I don't care for tacoma but there is no need to associate with the big names, lots of small groups from all over attend, the "Back Burner Boys" have a female vocalist thats very good and they do a six part harmony thats excellent. |

There's a really good compilation disc on rounder records called "hand picked 25 years of bluegrass on rounder records" that would make a great starting point for bluegrass listening. amazon link www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000004DW/002-3495560-1472061?v=glance |

I grew up around Bluegrass! STILL LOVE IT! My Grandmother is still a Bluegrass promoter still organizing and hosting three Bluegrass Festivals in Missouri along with a few benefit concerts. My Grandfather was doing the same with her until his death. I am sure I will take over when she is finished, but she loves it too much now to give it up. I grew up with the "greats" around the farm all the time... Bill Monroe, Kenny Baker, Ricky Skaggs, John Hartford..and many, many more....too numerous to list. Bill Monroe wrote a song titled "Delbert's Breakdown" that was later recorded by Karl Shiflett. Delbert is my Grandfather. Until recently I never showed much interest in playing a traditional Bluegrass instrument (played saxaphone) but have started to slowly teach myself how to play the fiddle. Oh how I wish I would have let my Grandpa help me, but I was just never interested then. |
