Quoted: For example, engineers discovered issues with Starliner's parachute system and its wiring, much of which turned out to be wrapped in flammable tape. that was a great idea. lol It sounds like they were following the Soviet example of venting peroxide past the parachute lines (which made them fall apart - and caused the somewhat important capsule they were holding to hit the ground at excessive speed. (similar to dropping it from 10,000 feet or so.) |

Five of the capsule’s 28 thrusters malfunctioned, forcing the crew to scramble and restart four of them. This setback caused Starliner to miss its initial docking window and circle the Earth for an extra hour before successfully linking up with the ISS. https://interestingengineering.com/space/starliner-docks-at-space-station-with-crew |

Are they in a little tiny capsule with no room to move? Jeez, that would drive me crazy.

So Boeing is the first to "leave one up there" - I guess being the butt of a worn out joke is a first of sorts.

Clickbait title. Based on the article they are not stranded in orbit unable to return…they will not return on time but are neither stranded or unable.

Quoted: Quoted: The Russian Soyuz is the safest lander. I’d hitch a ride on one of those. factually incorrect. Considering the length of service it is statistically the safest. I'd rather ride dragon though. Looks like a more comfortable ride. |

View Quote Yeah, they're not doing a spacewalk to inspect Starliner. It was already on the schedule. Delaying Starliner return is the least impact on schedule. |

I was pleasantly surprised that thing got into space without losing a door or a bumper. I was unpleasantly surprised to learn they were having problems with the RCS thrusters when it came time to dock. I still do not understand why NASA has pursued the Starliner project when we have Space X, which is a vastly superior launch system with a perfect safety record and substantial economic advantage. Space X could certainly make modifications to a Crew Dragon to make it suitable for moon missions. We do not need Starliner. I will be praying for the safe return of those astronauts.

Yesterday was exciting, and I didn't think we could make it more exciting, and we did that today," said Mark Nappi, Boeing's Starliner program manager. "It was amazing. We accomplished a lot and really more than expected. We exercised the team, we exercised the crew and just had an outstanding day." What dumb fucker would say something like that? The more enthusiastic sounding, the better the bonus. That engineering staff that has been putting in long days isn't so excited. But very few will speak up or push back; that's confrontational, no matter how it's presented or how true. |

(similar to dropping it from 10,000 feet or so.) The issue with the chutes is the tear away rate of the soft links. Nothing to due with venting or wrapping. About five years ago a corporate wide call came out hunting for someone with experience to work on those risers. I nearly threw my hat in, I was working a job I despised, and I have three decelerator design handbooks. I was apparently as qualified as anyone, I figured the work would be sorted out by testing after looking into the problem. I couldn't understand why they weren't sending proposals to the expert companies. The wiring is a separate problem. Wiring installations always get inadequate scrutiny. The work is beneath the structures folks that should be checking, and I doubt any of the current crew does more than assume another group checks icky details, instead of backing them up. Kapton insulation is one of those that crops up every few years, either because there's no tribal memory or a vendor doesn't pay attention to the requirements. And since no one gives a damn, the requirements might not be correct, or someone not qualified signs off on a substitute, or a vendor substitutes anyway. |
