Anyone buy a boxed DVD set but have a bad disk inside?

There is a chain store in my area going out of business, and their stuff is 50% off right now. But, if I buy a set, there is a chance that one of the discs will be bad, and since I wouldn't watch them all at once, by the time I found out, I wouldn't be able to return them.

Should I take the risk? What is the dud rate on DVDs?

All of the anime I buy is in box sets. I never had a problem.

But if the DVD manufacturing quality of mainstream Hollywood is equal to the crap they put out, I would be worried.

I'd expect wear to be heavier on the first discs

Local book/music place will buff dvds for $1 ea here, but it doesn't always work very well.  Blockbuster will do it if you're a frequent customer.

As a matter of fact, the stuff I want is anime

I buy a lot of boxed sets and have occasionally had a bad disk. Just had one this past Christmas, actually.

That said, they are infrequent (I'd guesstimate only about 2% of the time) and are most typically ones that got damaged during manufacturing. The most recent one had surface scratches on the last disk of the set. I have had one before that looked like the disk had been thrown down a gravel driveway (hmmm...). A few years ago I used to periodically encounter ones that actually had transfer issues, but I haven't seen that in a while.

So, if it was me, I would buy it and do a quick "count and condition" check. If everything looks good, it probably is.
